After submitting sample directly to vendor, what vendor will be the fastest one for adding detection?

Need to also take in the consideration of the signature updates. Some vendors do this minutely while others might be once a day. Virus Analysts can add a detection in 15 minutes but if the signature is not available till the next day, then you'll be out of luck. Responsive cooperation is needed. :p

I know Eset tends to be pretty slow.

    Tailored or generic?

I don´t know if I´ve understood your question correctly, but the amount of signatures are irrelevant if they consist mainly of generic types and therefore doesn´t need to update as frequently.

When I tried them, it was Avira and Kaspersky. Norton, with pulse updates, is probably third now or close to it.

All vendors can be fast if the sample is really dangerous . Generally some add detection pretty fast , some are slower . It doesn't really matter if it takes 2 , 4 or 24 hours until detection is pushed to clients as long as it is pushed .

Kaspersky Labs advertise themselves as the fastest at definition updates but as I said all vendors can be . Microsoft , too , for example . The first time I have ever sent sample to them , they were extremely fast at analysing and responding and pushed an update in less than an hour after my submission . So , IMO , it all depends on the sample .

Dr.Web seems to be pretty random. Sometimes I've received reply that the signature was added in an hour or two but sometimes it takes a day or two.

They prioritize like many vendors do. But they are very good.

Sometimes I get samples added under a few minutes, others take within a day or longer.

Kaspersky IMO, I have had cases where I received a reply within 10 minutes, which was really, really nice to see, and a detection update within the next hour....;)

Avira is also very good, and Dr.Web used to be very good (don't know how it is now because I haven't submitted any sample to them for a long time).

Kaspersky, sometimes they may be slow due to high load, but usually they're very fast.

I would say based on detection ratings, it isnt how fast, but how accurate you are.;)

avira is one of the fastest.

norton and avg is within 12-18 hours. you will see the updates.

the slowest of them all is eset and avast which takes 1 week i think.

I think there is no answer. If you send many suspicious files to av vendors, you will have low priority, they can't add the signatures for them very fast.If you send some threats(like virut, viking) to av vendors, some av vendors only add signatures to detect them, the others will write clean program to clean them.

no, AVG is different from all of them. they listen to their customer. they reply even if you send multiple samples. they always respond to me. unlike avast who respond only once.

When I was using Avira I had sent them a suspicious file and in less 24 hrs I received a friendly email response back showing it was clean, so I could only imagine if I sent some new variants how fast the turn around time would have been.:thumb:

Yes, that is correct, I have sent hundreds and always received a response from AVG. Sometimes it would take them ~48 hours to add them all but they always do. They even inform me if they didn't add some of the samples and why they didn't add them (incomplete/corrupted executable, etc.), that is very informative and nice from AVG :)
