Oh Oh, that's not what I thought it would do, Therefore I'm forgetting the dual ling fragers idea and will start my PD trial in due course, I'm not in any hurry. One extra I have is an external drive. One partition is for my HDD0 back up images which I NEVER WANT TO DEFRAG. Is PD selective on what partitions you use it on, that one I want un touched?

Hi Meriadoc and twl845 and all other readers here!

Just an update, I ended the DK trial today! I liked the product a lot. Fast to work and seemed to make the PC "snappier". The background defrag feature didn't have any obvious ill effects on my set up.

As per plan A I have now begun my 30 day trial of PD8. I did uninstall DK first! (nervous type) not because I lack resources but I was almost sure I would start flipping back and forth and make some kind of stupid error!

Initial reaction is looks like strong product, ran a defrag even though it said I didn't need to. It took significantly longer to do that task. This not a complaint just an observation.

    More later!

PS: any suggestions on best ways to test it and things to AVOID are always welcome!

Escalader, My initial defrag with PD took longer too, I guess because it lined up all the files as per the way PD operates. Future defrags should be faster because everything is where PD expects to find it. How do you like the layout of PD compared to DK? Do you think its laid out better so everything is more easily accessable? Did you do an off line defrag? If so, is bootup any faster for you?

Check the position of pagefile.sys and MTF before of made an offline defrag with PD, and after tell us if they were changed... ;)

    Hi Rich,

I think you will find that the standard Windows defragger isn't quite so hot when dealing with a System partition. ;)

Well one item stands out for me that i determined does in fact give my PC a noticable boost compared to even Contig & others as well as $M default one.
That's file placement! I tried PerfectDisc too and contrary to most other's glowing results it didn't quite fair for me as i expected, could be simply since i'm not always afforded the luxury of spare time that i wasn't able to read into all the settings it needed before using it.

But that's OK. Variety is the spice of life. :) And i found DiskTrix's UltimateDefrag bested PD for me and so i'm all set for hyper-Defragging now.
Plenty of claims they make can be found right here.

Still early, but so far so good. Plus i favor the more realistic overview of your disk platter that it displays, and it's file placement movements in real-time if that's your cup of tea like mine.

Yes - Its tough having to tick "Let Perfect Disk Manage(Recommended)" :D

Seriously though diminishing marginal returns alone suggests that good enough is good enough - well it is for me anyway

UD is my favorite defragger as well (for online defrags). But it does not do nearly as good a job as DK or PD with offline (boot-time) defrags!

Well if thats all there was too it then theres not much to PD then. With UD "YOU" set up exactly where you want to place files/folder for optimal performance and quick access, OR, it has an AUTO mode like you suggest PD does. I get in a hurry sometimes and overlook even the smallest detail occasionally.

UD has a series of methods all designed to customize the best placements for your file system and i like to pick & choose or otherwise experiement thru trial and error to tweak out the sharpest settings that will improve performance and minimize as much as possible long accesses by the read heads for that Perfect Balance everyone looks to get. UD does that to perfection for me.

After defragging with PD i seen a noticable speed boost, of that theres no argument or complaint, but i don't lose any of the same velocity with UD, only gain a more customized defrag IMO.

Can you tell me what to look for? What's not so hot? I rarely defragment the system partition, unless I've installed some new programs - with Deep Freeze, nothing changes on it. But tell me what to look for, and the next time I defragment that partition, I'll watch...

Do you mean in accessing files quickly?

I just checked with my most used programs: MSWord opens a file in one second. Photoshop: opens a file in 1 - 2 seconds, depending on the size of the file.

Is there something else I should be concerned about? I confess to not having paid much attention to this subject in the past...

    regards,

    -rich

Sometimes I think these third part defrags are just like various malware scanners, registry scanners etc. People like scanner-type products. Atleast it gives them a feeling that their system is now secure/ fast/ tweaked etc etc.

It also gives bread n butter to the people who launch these products.

No offense pls! I myself like scanners.:D

All i know that is with UltimateDefrag in choosing "Recency" from the 5 selections it offers the user, that only into the defrag at a mere 8%, my browser and apps pick up tremendous speed & quickness while it's running. Afterwards it's like i installed some rapid-booster into the machine to give it that lightning-quick reaction. Honestly, in all my studies and research over the years i admit that i never expected a DEFRAG could make such a HUGE difference untill these hyper-defraggers hit the scene like PD, UD, DK, and whatever others have been thoroughly fashioned to do such a magnificient job with that. It's most impressive to say the least and is convinced me of my shortcomings & neglect concerning them.

    Escalader, why not?

Make sure you have a working image if you are nervous and then defrag those system and paging files ;) .

As long as there is magnetic material to be aligned onto metal there will always be Perfect Disk and that's the fact Jack! :D

Well, I have 11 days left in the PD trial, but I've seen enough now to go with it.
I have done the off line defrag as well and the product seems stable.

I did have a few glitches during the DK trial but I can't say there is much difference in "snappiness" one versus the other. I'm not keen on their ongoing defrag concept but it worked on my machine. I just not going to pay for a feature that I'm not keen on.

They have offered a 20% off coupon that runs out Monday.

Is anybody aware of where I could do legally better that 20%?

    Thanks

Earlier in this thread, I said...
Now I'm wondering what might be an objective way to benchmark one's system in order to try and determine which defragger or which defragging method within any given defragger delivers the best performance. Any thoughts on this? :doubt:

Don't bother with defraggers at all, or use one but don't bother trying to find out if it does any good? :doubt:

I hate defragging, it kills my mind and it bores me to death. It's a necessary evil on my computer, nothing more than that.
Once a month is more than enough. I don't even feel it when it's done. Pffft.
