Whats a good video player?

Still found many players have problems clicking on various menu links at the 'root menu' of a DVD. Including Media Player Classic. Sometimes doesn't allow you to proceed to the next stage, or even watch a DVD (for me anyway, region 4). You're just stuck at the menus, same with MPlayer.

KMPlayer has always worked well.


SMplayer doesn't seem to like to load root menus, just goes straight to the first episode, for example. You can access the next episode through the player's menus, but accessing 'extra episodes', might be more difficult to find. Also, changing various 'language or sound' settings through the root menu, like in a DVD player, without the root menu, you won't be able to do that either.

Sometimes there is no way to access 'extra features' on a DVD. You can try through the menu, but come up short. As previously mentioned, try not to skip ahead through a movie, as you might find the audio/video might be a millisecond out of whack, enough to annoy you!



I've found more recent versions of KMPlayer portable, but the one I posted, seems to contain all files in the one folder. If you run it sandboxed, basically, opens only a couple of files.

The newer versions create a larger number of files, and not always contained in the KMplayer folder. So I've tried to avoid the newer versions. The newer versions have made the context menus a little easier, but the older version is stable, and I haven't had any problems, even running from a USB, no slowdowns.

But if you don't care about portable versions, get the latest version of KMPlayer.

Just a note with the portable version which is common sense - to access the menu, you right-click on the interface.

 

GOMplayer, tried that, and had problems playing various files, although many recommend it.

So to me, it's between VLC and KMPlayer.

Depending on your requirements, VLC is easier to use, KMPlayer has more features.

 

Media player classic is not portable.Also the player does not much features for changing video playback features compared to korean media player(kmplayer).It plays all though.

 

I use Zoom Player Free 5 (v.6 is payware now) with FFdshow. But i am thinking to move to SMPlayer now.


A note about KMplayer, for ethical reasons. Basically KMPlayer has taken open source code from the Media Player Classic project, while keeping their player closed source.

Fuzzfas, I read that awhile ago.

I don't think it's the best way to go about things, but considering the problems with media players crashing, locking up, not playing files, as a user who pays for every DVD I own (from amazon), I got to use the best one available.

SMPlayer looks good, but still, many problems with skipping ahead, forwards, backwards, and maintaining visual/audio accuracy through DVDs. Once they address this problem, I'll give it another go.

 

That's enough for me to dislike it. And it's Windows only, so i'm not missing much.
Thank you for the illustrations though Saraceno, no doubt it has quality, but there's no way i'm using it or recommending it .

I know, when i first used KMplayer, i didn't know about the GLP breach either and was happily using it. But it had too many features (half of which i couldn't understand) so i ditched it and later i found out about the gpl breach too, so... I mean, i 'd rather stick with ZPlayer and ffdshow as long as it plays content or switch to VLC than use Kmplayer. I also think GOM can use FFDshow instead of his own decoder, so that's another great option.


BTW, Saraceno (or any other SMPlayer user), what video output is the best in SMplayer? (gl, gl (YUV), direct3d etc). Because it has many options but no explanation about them and i prefer the ffdshow output. One remarcable thing about SMPlayer, is that it takes much less CPU even compared to ffdshow!

 

You can set it to store all settings in an ini file, so I think it would qualify as portable.

 

The KMPlayer is what I use and have been extremely satisfied in using it.

Plays everything out of the box, has every feature I could ever need, looks nice, and works flawlessly.

 

I tried VLC player today but found its image quality was obviously poorer than Windows media player 12. Don't you notice that?

I'd like to know why you guys discard Windows media player. I use it with code packet installed. And I use iTunes to play music.

It seems VLC needs some tweak. I set the video to Opengl mode and it looks much better.

*sigh* I guess I'll still be looking for a new player. KMPlayer crashes like hell for me when I try using the seek ability, it locks up TIGHT. I loved GOM, but was always a little concerned about the "finding the right codec" thing, it could bring trouble, though if I ran into a file that gave me that message, 9 times out of 10 it never found the right codec anyway. Plus, what's this about connecting out to !Ask even though !Ask isn't installed with GOM?

Hi there, yeah the latest build does indeed give me lockups quite often. I haven't tried the portable version, that might make a difference so I'll check it out. I actually like this player, the interface is really nice-looking and there are a ton of options.

 

The portable one is slightly slower to load, but no difference in playing.

Once you extract the zip folder kmp, open notepad and paste the following:

[\Software\KMPlayer\KMP2.0\OptionArea]
ConfigUseIni=int:1

Then go to 'save as', and select save as type and 'all files'.
Save with the filename KMPCfg.ini
Place this file in the main KMP folder then run the program.

Then go to preferences, and uncheck, checking for updates.



Then you can say, switch to a better looking skin.

 

Thanks for all those screenshots, I finally have this player working good. What I did was do a full reinstall of the full version and for whatever reason it's no longer having problems
