On my Win 8.1 (64 bit) laptop it's:

    Windows Firewall
    Trend Micro Titanium AV
    MalawareBytes Anti-Malware Pro (real-time)
    Zemana AntiLogger
    Spyware Blaster
    WinPatrol Plus

    SuperAntiSpyware Pro (on-demand only)
    & I'm behind a router

My computer came with a lifetime subscription to the Trend Micro AV, so I'm giving it a try. So far, it's been very light on this computer, does what it's supposed to.

yes their whole approach is very innovative, we just have to give them some time to fix bugs & issues and iron their product, the dev team is very very young in age

I've just switched from Roboscan to Ikarus.

Testing of some recent malware packs showed that BitDefender's detection rate is definitely better than Roboscan's (which others here have posted about in the past), despite Roboscan using BitDefender's scan engine.

I did some scanning of samples missed by Roboscan at VirusTotal. In almost every case the missed files were detected by Ikarus. Not only that, 99% of the time the samples were detected by name - i.e. not heuristic or generic detections.

After installing Ikarus and doing some scans of malware packs from MalwareTips, I can confirm that the detection rate for these samples is truly excellent with very few samples missed. There was an almost 98% detection rate for the most recent malware pack.

I have on idea how threats in the malware packs compare to typical threats found with surfing.

I work on a lot of friends computers that are riddled with malware. Of course, the best line of defense is browsing intelligently, but as we all know, that isn't easy to teach to certain people.

I'm curious what people use or recommend as a free option(s) that provides a novice user with enough protection to prevent them from reinfection of malware. It would definitely save me time from cleaning their systems every so often!

I have installed Comodo Internet Security 7, EMET 4.1 and Defensewall 3.22 in my Family's shared computer (after reformatting the computer due to a malware infection). The setup is surprisingly stable, with little to no product conflict at all. Since the computer's primary purpose is for internet browsing and document typing, I chosen this setup due to its unobtrusive nature, with little interaction from the user.

For Comodo, I followed Chiron's install guide in techsupportalert. for EMET, I just imported the popular software xml to the program while for DefenseWall, I just leave the settings to default.

Welcome to Wilders. You'll find lots of threads here that will help to choose solutions. Also this might help:

My formula with friends is to install Sandboxies free version. If you can convince your friends to constantly do their browsing sandboxed for just a few weeks, they ll realize real quick that SBIE is the best prevention tool that they ever known about since they wont be getting infected anymore. Its like a rule, anyone that I know that tries Sandboxie for more than a few weeks, keeps using it.

If you decide to install Sandboxie in your friends computers, just make sure they know how to save bookmarks and files out of the sandbox. And how their antivirus interacts with Sandboxie. If they know that and you set the sandbox to delete on closing, they are ready to use SBIE.

    Not really.
MBAM, HMP and SD are used only when needed.
They aren't actively used. Just updated when updates are available. :)

OK, I see, so you´re using them on demand. :)

I suppose ESET Smart Security, AppGuard, and Zemana Antilogger is your realtime defense?

Whatever you put on, make sure you set it to automatically download and install updates, preferably without any user interaction. Just judging by my friends, it throws them for a loop when they have to okay anything.;)

You can go with free AVs and firewalls, but I would recommend them buying either the SAS or MBAM Pro versions and letting them run real-time.

Put WinPatrol on. They pay attention when Scotty barks and tend not to automatically allow changes because they vaguely understand that something is perhaps trying to change something that shouldn't be changed.:D

SAS is really not a viable option to run on its own due to its absolutely terrible detection rates these days, which has been discussed a lot here at Wilders. However, it will be fine installed alongside another solution.
