Pest Patrol claims to protect against trojans & worms as well as lots of privacy stuff.

I am still testing PP. So far everything about it looks very well designed and executed. Another big plus for me [because my box is old & slow] is that PP uses a delightfully small % of system resources. PP has an excellent site. Good FAQ. A lively forum.

    Lots of pluses.

Being as I am such a newbie, I don't want to get taken in by PP's pretty face and *friendliness*

What I am most concerned about is WHETHER OR NOT PP's designers expended too much effort on keeping toy poodles from crapping on my lawn [that is, "protecting privacy"] ...and not enough time on keeping me safe from the rabid Rottweiler that's roaming my neighborhood [that is, "protecting against trojans, worms, et alia"].

It's also what bothers me about PP's otherwise excellent forum. Namely, most of the raves from happy customers have to do with the poodles. There's hardly a comment about the rabid Rottweiler.

Question: Will PP do an *adequate* AT job? [Adequate is all I need.]

Plus any other comments and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    bellgamin,

Safersite is currently (Beta) testing a fully redesigned new version. Personally, I'd like to have a look at the final release.

    regards.

    Hi bellgamin,

I beta tested Pest Patrol for a long time. It is definitely an up and coming AT. The main concern I have with them is sometimes they go a very long time between updates. Other than that, IMHO I beleive Pest Patrol has the
potential to be a good AT, they just are not there yet.

However, using the free version as a backup AT is an excellent choice to get a second opinion.

If you are going to spend money, they are other excellent choices out there like TDS and BoClean.

    HTH.

    Regards,
    Kent

    Hi Paul,

That is when I quit beta testing for Pest Patrol. There are still a lot of bugs to be worked out. It constantly causes my system to crash and I had many problems trying to get it to install. I do not know if it is a WIN XP issue or maybe just my system but at least until the beta testing gets further along, I had to stop testing it, just was not stable on my system at all.

    Regards,
    Kent

Just another quick note, it will be interesting to see when the new version comes out if thet will update it more frequently. The new release may be eating into their time spent on updating. To me, with trojans as prolific as they are, going several weeks at times between updates is a little long.....IMHO..... :D

    Regards,
    Kent

    Hi Kent,

Well, that's what's Beta testing is all about ;).

I do agree database updates should be released more often. Could well be, the Final Release is an improvement in this regard.

    regards.

Paul & Kent - Many thanks for the great information. Whether or not it was your intention, you have convinced me to stick with PP.

I find it unusual that PP allows a 1-year evaluation period, with the only draw-back being that any bad stuff discovered by PP must be deleted manually.

Their evaluation policy is so doggone fair and generous that I fully intend to buy the program just as soon as their beta graduates into a version.

    Regards,
    Bellgamin

Sir Blaze, all these are anti-viruses - and anyone certainly needs one in conjunction with an anti-trojan, since anti-trojans will not cope with viruses ;).

    regards.

I bought Pest Patrol almost a year ago because I thought that I should have an on-demand Trojan scanner to compliment BOClean (it being a memory-resident scanner only). At that time, Pest Patrol was purely an on-demand scanner and TDS-3 was too big for the system I had. In that time, I saw it go through many chages, and ups and downs, including being downgraded here at Wilders to 4.0 stars. I believe that was due mainly to the infrequent updates and fairly high incidence of false positives. I have not had too many problems with it, though I still use it purely for on-demand scanning, and have not used the PPmemcheck component. The main strike I have against it is the low frequency of updates. I agree with Kent in that going several weeks between updates is too long.
