Go Rangers! (And Webroot. I'll be renewing my AV subscription in 2 or 3 months on my XP machine.)

I realize that you are referencing hockey, but since Webroot is in Colorado (and today is the first football game), all I've got to say is Go Bronco's!

Webroot Webinar - Evolution of Encrypting Ransomware Oct 23 2014

This should be a very good one! Given by Tyler Moffitt-Senior Threat Research Analyst, Webroot

Encrypting ransomware is a key term in the title as just ransomware is broad and can include threats that are very different, easy to detect, and don't encrypt files at infection - the key differentiation point that gives these threats the upper hand against AV.

The presentation is going to be on all the encrypting ransomwares we've seen thus far. It will cover in-depth features of each one and how malware authors made improvements as time went on. There is quite a few so it will be a full presentations worth (cryptolocker, dir-crypt, cryptowall, cryptodefense, zero-locker, critroni, synolocker, cryptographic locker). I'll show from start to finish of an infection and what a user will experience and will highlight social engineering tactics along with the methods of payment circumventing money mules. And of course will end with our product and functionality. Journaling capability will be clearly stated in a fashion that highlights its strength, but not in a way that would lead to false assumptions.

I think they need to make some tweaks to the web filter. Way too many FPs. I keep having issues with my Outlook.com (formally hotmail) email. I click on an email and then I get the page saying it is blocking a malicious site. I just installed the program this afternoon, and I have gotten that error 3x already. Also has blocked some other legit sites outside Outlook.com. I tried disabling the web filter extension for now, and will see how it goes.

I use outlook.com and I don't get any? What Browser?

    Thanks,

    Daniel

I keep my outlook email open in Firefox. But I'm 90% sure I also had some legit sites blocked in Chrome.

Funny thing is, some times I will just click on an old email, the the whole page blacks out with the Webroot warning. If I click to ignore and proceed anyway, I still have to reopen Outlook.com. Like I said, I finally turned the webfilter off.

WRSA was always one of my favorite AVs, but this summer it has been giving me a ton of headaches. Today was the first time going back to it in a while.

I did exactly this, a couple of months back due to the FPs.

Hi guys it's best to contact Support and let them know of the FP's from BrightCloud in which the Web Filter uses to get the determinations from so they can get them corrected. Webroot Customer Service

    Thanks,

I too get very frustrated by all the BrightCloud FPs I encounter for supposedly dodgy websites.
Imho I do not think this is going to solve the underlying problem. I think it is the algorithm used for diagnosing whether the website is dodgy that is the underlying problem. Every time I get an FP for a website (which is depressingly often), I check with the BrightCloud lookup page and 9.9 times out of 10 it proves to be nothing to do with the infection rate—which is each time zero—rather everything to do with a combination of young age and low popularity. It seems that BrightCloud is deciding that by default all new and infrequently visited websites are to be deemed suspicious and so to be blocked. IMO until this issue is addressed, reporting these FPs will prove to be an unending and frustrating task.

I will contact Webroot and show them these posts about the constant FP's from the Web Shield and BrightCloud but I know they are working on making the Web Filter more user friendly in the next yearly Release as Webroot will not be using the year anymore such as 2014 to 2015 we will see the new version when it comes out and will have a new version number like v8.0.6.xxx from v8.0.4.xxx I'm not sure what numbers they are going to use at this point but I will let you know when it's released which should be very soon.

    Thanks,

    Daniel ;)

Okay I have been in contact with Webroot about the FP's and other issues with the Web Shield so they asked me to post here that they are working on it with the BrightCloud Team and when I get more info I will let everyone know!

    Thanks,

    Daniel

i have a issue most likely will have to contact support for but i installed webroot for a cust about 4-5 months ago and later found out his bios battery was bad. so for about 1-2 months or more his system was always set back to approx 2007, he would reset it and then he said wonder why it kept going back to 2007 lol until he finally called me to ask. now i replaced the battery for him and all is good there but webroot says its expired now that the time is set back to the correct date. i have tried uninstalling and reinstalling and also removing his system from the console and again reinstalled. so TH any idea if his key will work once again or did he loose it? ill contact support if you dont have any other ideas to try out.

im sure support will take care of it just was hoping for a quick and easy fix.

    thanks

I had many back and forths with the Webroot team re the false positives, as well as submitting quite a few web addresses to the URL Reputation Change Request site. Nothing was resolved so I disable the extension.

I understand everyone's dissatisfaction with the Web Shield and the FP's from BrightCloud all I can say they are working on a more user friendly way of putting it into action hopefully it will be in the new yearly product to come out soon! Also I will be in Contact with the BrightCloud Team Directly on this issue not just support but I will find out more during the week. I went high up on this one and I was put in contact with one of the Senior Managers and she read all of the info here and at the Webroot Community so things will get moving faster tomorrow.

    Thanks,

    Daniel ;)
