Webfiltering is in IE - NOT in Chrome

I have just encountered two of my customers that had the webfiltering rolled out to them recently, and both user's Win7 X64-based systems have webfiltering active/working in IE (10 and 11), but for some reason, on both systems, Chrome does not have the extension for the webfiltering active.

I have had the users:
1) Uninstall WSA and then reinstall WSA.
2) Uninstall Chrome and reinstall it.

Neither of these actions helped. My concern is that this might be (substitute: must be) happening to other users as well.

 

Do you have access to these computers? You can try this: The number can be from 1.0.0.12 to 1.0.0.15!




And let us know if this works for them. I don't use Chrome but I heard this works.

Thanks TH! There are two more steps involved in getting the web filtering system in Chrome to be "active":

1) As TH described, copy the .CRX file into the open Chrome.

2) In Chrome, select Settings-Extensions, then copy the .CRX file from the lower-left of the screen (on Chrome 31) to the Extensions "area" where extensions are listed.

3) Chrome will "ask" for the new extension to be activated.

Just got both Chrome systems updated and now have two happier users on my hands...

I have just seen the missing Chrome web filtering extension on two more Win7 X64 systems. The only common element I have been able to determine so far is that all of the affected systems already have other Chrome extensions enabled and active, and Chrome 31 has the missing WSA extension.

As previously described, the same 3-step process was used to make web filtering active on these two systems.

 

Is there any chance that Chrome is just disabling it in the Addons panel, rather than having it not be installed? I saw that on my system here, where I had to manually enable it.

Joe, on all four systems I looked at, the WSA Chrome extension was just plain missing as opposed to being disabled in the Addon panel.

 

For what it's worth, the Chrome extensions can be a little bit touchy in certain situations. A few weeks ago I did a clean re-install of WSA and had some difficulty with Chrome. I uninstalled WSA and manually removed the extensions from all browsers. Following a reboot, I reinstalled WSA.

IE and FireFox both picked up the extensions without a problem, but Chrome did not. We tried quite a few things to get Chrome to accept the extensions again, but it did not work. The LastPass extension was also affected, and I ran the utility to remove/fix/reinstall that extension. It did not help.

What ended up working to convince Chrome to install the extensions was to do a clean reinstall of Chrome.

 

Thanks, Google is making quite a few changes to Chrome which could impact this long term anyway - they're looking to disable any local extension installation unless run through their store, which would be highly inconvenient for users of these types of addons. We're exploring all options as we speak.

 

Very interesting! It would indeed be (Expletive Deleted) inconvenient for extensions like WSA's, but at the same time it would also go a long way to blocking a lot of the PUA crap that gets installed and causes so very many problems. Keep us informed!
