I'm not sure if this is the correct forum, but I don't see one that is obviously for trying to fix an existing virus.

The problem I have originated while surfing the net. All of my windows and tabs closed suddenly, I think because of a link I 2 clicked on. Moments later a rather phoney looking Windows Vista Security 2012 window popped up and started to pretend to search for viruses. I closed the window and tried to reopen my internet browser and got another window from Windows Vista Security telling me that I had a trojan and needed to update my Windows Security. Nod antivirus is my only security, so I can tell I've managed to pick up something nasty.

I found the process on the task manager, it was pretty obvious given that the description was written in what looked like the Russian alphabet, and after some struggle delete a small program, then empty my recycling bin.

I try to open Firefox and I get a message, this time looking like it is from my computer, asking me to chose a program to open the file with. I tried opening a random single player game on my computer and got the same message. I tried restarting my computer and was alarmed to discover that Nod had not automatically restarted itself, and neither had the other programs that are supposed to start with my computer. Trying to start any programs (including iTunes, Skype, Firefox, and Microsoft Word) all give me the same message of needing to choose the program to open the file with. Going into the programs folders and trying to use the .exe file there to open it gives the same result.

I got Firefox to work by hitting "look for the appropriate program on the web" and once opened indirectly like this, the shortcut worked as normal.

This sounds a lot like the problem this person had:
    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=315788
Which unfortunately doesn't say how the problem was resolved.

I'm rather worried right now because I still can't get Nod to start, so speedy help would be very appreciated.

UPDATE: Figured out that by right clicking and saying "run as administrator" I can open things. Still curious how/why this happened and if there is a quick fix for all of my programs instead of doing this one at a time.

superantispyware have a small exefix program here

after running the tool I would reccomend restarting your computer and then check if the programs that should load with windows do. If eset doesnt load with windows or has any errors i would reccomend to reinstall it. all antivirus programs are having problems with detecting fake antivirus. its a shame you deleted the file instead of sending it to eset for analysis.

I dont know which country you are from but eset do provide free phone support in some countries so if you have any further issues i would reccomend visiting your local eset website and ringing them for help.

    Hello,

If you contact the technical support department at your local ESET office or distributor, they should be able to help you examine the system and fix any issues from the fake antivirus program.

In North America, tech support can be reached toll-free at +1 (866) 343-3738.

    Regards,

    Aryeh Goretsky

Running a system restore fixed all the lingering issues. ESET seems to be working just fine again.
