OSI Layer 8 is a difficult one to protect. Companies can help this layer along by automatically patching, setting default configurations for lower layers, and warning of updates available, however the success of these controls can very due to the inconsistent nature of layer 8. If this layer of the OSI model was completely prohibited from interfacing with the lower layers, some argue 99.99% of all computer security concerns would be wiped out overnight. :)

I'd be interested to know by what means they "scanned" 28 million computers each month. I'd also bet that they're using a very narrow criteria for what qualifies as "protected", aka counting only conventional default-permit based security apps.
Would you want such a system? Those "some" want users on systems that they have no control over.

Okay, without resorting to techie jargon, there are a few things to keep in mind:

    1. This is solely a McAfee "survey"

    2. We don't have the slightest clue what they used for criteria, nor what setups these millions of systems had, what they were used for, etc.

    3. You don't need a survey to understand the vast majority of computer users know next to nothing about even basic precautions.

I have no clue whatsoever what "political correctness" has to do with people saying they are protected or not, but whatever.

It does not surprise me. The apathy of most people is disappointing. I talk to customers all day long that make their living doing work that requires them to use computer software. Yet they don't want to be bothered to learn anything about using a PC. It's "not in their job description". Whatever, if you spend 8 hours a day sitting in front of one it actually is. Or they say "I'm computer illiterate" like that is cute and somehow that makes it ok. The vast majority can't tell me what version of Windows they are sitting in front of all day. "What version of Windows are you using?"... to which they reply "2007". Aaaaahhhhhhh!!!!! o_O

    Yawn....

If you are not using McAfee, your doing a poor job of protecting your computer.
