Tracking me through my cell phone?

My cell phone has a gps like feature, is there any way that anyone can track me with this? I'm not paranoid but I was told that people can, and I was just wondering.

 

Oh yeah of course they can - google something like "mobile phone tracking" and you'll get a list of places where people can pay to track anyone's phone.

 

OK But no one can do it for free? That's cool. I had my ex stalking me a few months back and I hope she don't do it again. LOL

 

She doesn't know your number does she? If so, you might want to get that changed.

 

I don't think she does. She hasn't called me on it. She did before and after she called me on it she was at my front door.

Actually, the phone companies can track you by phone number and triangulation without gps (which is I believe satellite based tracking), and have been able to do it for years at the formal request of the authorities.

How do I know this you might ask? When I was working for a networking company involved in telecom (late 90's), I took a course by one of Verizon's long-in-the-tooth field engineers who told us the skinny. They also mentioned that between 9PM-3AM all of the cell phone traffic is recorded into a database to accumulate evidence on drug traffic in our metropolitan area. And to top it off, the megawattage of cell phone towers (not on the ground, but up at the antenna high in the sky) is something you don't want to get near - just look for any fried birds at the bottom of the tower!

So, apparently, the best way not to be tracked is to turn off your cell phone and if you have gps, then that may not matter, as the gps unit may be drawing what current it needs to stay live when the phone is turned off.

Thanks for the info. I don't really care if the phone campany finds me, heck they have my address anyways. I'm just worred about my crazy ex finding me again and starting trouble.

 

If she was to know someone in the phone company then she could get the info from them, but if she don`t then you`re pretty safe. I knew 3 operators where I used to live and getting an unlisted number was never a problem, so I guess tracking someone would be just as easy...if I wanted that.

 

Well, I guess I'm safe. Last time she found me she tossed a rock through my window. I called the police but by the time they got to where I lived, she was gone. Next time she finds me I'm packing up and moving out of the this country. LOL

 

Be prepared for spam phone calls in the very near future especially if you have the GPS feature on your phone. It was on the news that some advertisers are going to start sending ads according to your location at any given time to let you know about places to shop in the area you are in at that moment. sounds like a buck rogers story but they demonstrated it and it does work. Won't they ever leave us alone

 

I don't want spam on my cell phone. It's bad enough I get a lot of junk snail mail. lol

If you're getting hassled by the ex, call the cops.

 

They'd need the phone numbers. Currently in the US, telemarketing calls to cell phones are illegal.

 

I called the cops before, but by the time they got here the damage was done and she was gone. She denied the whole thing and had her friend lie for her. Maybe If I lived by a doughnut shop, the cops would been there faster. LOL
