For the first time in my life, I'm surprisingly thinking about cloud storage. It never honestly interested me for a few reasons, but now I can see with at least some data, the advantage of using something like CS. I'm not worried about price so much, as a lot of services offer free or cheap storage for just a little bit of head room. What I am thinking about is privacy and security. Primarily, are those running the cloud services able to access your data, and or can a hacker \ bored teenager do the same? Even the best companies \ systems out there are still vulnerable, fine. With that said, if you go with the best of all worlds company wise AND encrypt your data, is that the best situation \ way to deal with any and all problems? Thank you!
A "critical" factor is to select a ZERO KNOWLEDGE cloud service. That is what I use for my password manager as an example. In zero knowledge all items are encrypted on your local device and then transmitted back and forth between the cloud. At NO time can the cloud provider have any chance to decrypt any of your data. Clearly, this means that should the cloud provider somehow get hacked the data "glob" containing YOUR personal stuff is beyond their eyes!! Extending the benefit, such a cloud can offer sync across devices so that you can access YOUR personal data on any machine where you are able to provide the credentials needed to view the contents. You can bolster the cloud access with U2F, which is what I do as a prerequisite for any access. In NO scenario would I trust the provider to keep my data safe IF they have any access at all. Not ever!!
