    FYI

That kernel is in Server 2008, allows complete GUI-less OS.
This is possible because the graphics sub-system is now user mode rather than Kernel in Vista/2008 Server. From a stability point of view this also means that the GUI cannot directly crash the OS, like NT 3.5/4/2K/XP could.

I do like the OS architectural changes, they just need to finish the GUI :p

I would go back to windows ME before I use vista again. To me this thread sounds just like the mojave expirement redux with everyone praising "vista" and it's greatness.

The only good thing I can say about "vista" is if it walks like a duck,it quacks like a duck, and it looks like a duck. It must be a duck. It's already too late to be praising "vista" it'll soon be joining windows ME in it's rightful place.

In the 1+ year that I've used it, I never encountered any trouble or disappointment.

In the end, however, Vista would never end up like Windows ME. Vista, in comparison to XP, is not as bad as Windows ME to Windows 2000.

One more thing...we are not praising Vista, rather we're just merely saying that it is not as bad as people make it out to be.

I am not praising XP or Vista, but given only those two choices, I would rather use Vista.

Well looks like they were shown some features like back up, 3d flip etc. It is all the stuff relevant to the average user.

    Guys, have you used Vista?

I say nonsense to that blog. I loaded apps without a problem when I got my laptop, Vista Home Premium. The only slowdown was figuring out how, since everything is different.

I'll grant that the test would have been more viable had they shown somebody loading MS Office or any other software, things like that. All in all, though, I find Vista very intuitive, and that's validated by my wife also having a Vista laptop. She's taken to it like a duck to water, learning it faster than me in fact.

We're sold on Vista and, if you've read any of my older posts, you'll know I was a Vista hater until just recently. I'd never used it before or even seen it. Now that I have, and have used it, I've moved to the other side.

You're making the wrong observation imo.
It means that the campaigns were somewhat successful, although nothing is final.

As usual, not one specific problem or issue cited based on personal experience... just typical unsubstantiated bashing... what else is new? :p

Well that is typical. Vista was bashed so much that ppl wrote it off before even using it.

    Hello,
Well, it's like prison showers - you don't have to be in them to know they're bad. The same here, with computers / software. You don't have to try everything to make sure it's good - or bad. Why not install vundo or whatever, after all until you try it, you can't be sure.

I have been running Vista since the first beta was released and I have never experienced the problems you describe. I am running Vista Home Premium on three computers without any problems.

    Hello coldmoon,
    i have experienced both issues.
for 2. i have a different solution. i have a wireless connection and sometimes it disconnects and the wirless zeroconfig gui tells me it cannot find any wireless networks. so i simply disable the wireless card in device manager and renable. i have kept IPV6 on.
1 shouldnt happern i mean cmon file transfers is a job all os's do and shouldnt of been released with the file transfer speed at the current rate.

I guess I've never really paid attention to this one, cause I don't find it slow at all. I just transferred 50GB worth of data from my internal to external (USB) and it didn't take that long.

it starts off at around say 50mb/sec then drops to 20mb then 10 then 5mb in around 2 seconds and estomates like 8 hours for file transfer. then if your unlucky vista sucks up all your ram and crawls to a halt and cant use it.

These aren't correct comparisons. In any case, I've been using Vista and despite being heavy on my low end laptop, theres nothing wrong with it.

    Hi lodore,
I use a wired router and this does not happen frequently. It happens every few days or so without warning, the connection just drops out for the Vista machine but stays active for the XP systems until the hard cycle I described.

The file transfers start quickly. In fact they seem to "finish" quickly until it gets to the end of the transfer. At this point, the transfer seems to stall for a couple of minutes and then completes... weird

bigc73542, does the second happen for you or does the final copy to disk complete quickly?

    Mike

I've never experienced that kind of estimate and Vista sucking up all RAM. I use O&O CleverCache to manage the file cache, so I always have ~1GB of free RAM.

I don't waste RAM, it's just how my system behaves. Windows will use all of the available memory to cache files and other data, which I don't like because I find the computer running sluggish after a certain period of inactivity.
