Router Recommendations

You could always try getting their older/cheaper models like the RT-N56U or RT-N16. If you need cheaper still and you don't mind using "g" wireless, the Linksys WRT54GL is very good.

It would help if you gave a specific budget.

 

The Asus RT-N56U is an excellent router and it is my favorite wireless-N router these days.

For non-techies, the $70 Belkin N600 DB is top-notch and comes close to matching both the range and performance of the N56U in my home environment; I have installed dozens of them with absolutely no follow-up calls (or trips) needed. This router is inexpensive and very reliable.

 

Since when has Belkin made a good router?

I picked up the BUFFALO WZR-600DHP a few months ago and am impressed by it. Comes with dd-wrt stock and runs quite cool.

I can't give you an exact date , but I can tell you that the Belkin N600 DB router is a good buy at $70. It is reliable, stable, and has very good range especially on the 2.4Ghz band. I have one as a backup router in case my Asus N56U goes belly-up...

 

Just following up.

I setup the Asus router last week. So much better than the Netgear I had. Speeds are insanely fast throughout the house. Its a bit weird in some rooms and on certain devices, (my smartphone being one of them). So may need to look into an extender or something at some point.

But overall I've been well pleased with the product. I wonder if custom firmware could be the fix? Not sure, have not had time to mess with it and I've been and still am a bit under the weather.

So basically, if you are thinking of picking up the Asus I mentioned in my first post, do not hesitate as its a nice product for sure.

Trooper- if by weird you mean that you need more signal strength, if the Asus uses a dd-wrt knockoff or Tomato firmware you should be able to find a setting for default TX Power (transmit power adjustment). Normally it is set very low.

 

For the RT-N66U the stock Asus ....4.270 firmware is the latest version at the time I write this and it seems to be working really well for me. You can also try Merlin's firmware (Asuswrt-Merlin) which is reported to have a number of bug fixes, upgrades and extra features beyond the stock Asus firmware. It's fully compatible because Merlin's core code is based directly on the latest Asus firmware code. You install/upgrade to Merlin's firmware exactly the same as the standard Asus firmware without having to do any special procedures....and you can always flash it back to the standard Asus firmware at any time if you want.
