hm well to be honest I don't see myself as ever buying any recorded music again until/if this stops. I do see the weakness in the "privacy" issue since when you share files you leave the browsing of them open to the public - no expectation of privacy. These actions will not halt downloading one bit, mark my words it'll take a hell of a lot more to stop the tide.
I don't think they'll stop downloading, but slow it down, maybe? Only time will tell, but these seem more than symbolic strikes to me.
The actions of the RIAA are the actions of small minded people without the ability to realize the potential in a changing environment. For years, the RIAA has been ripping off both the recording artists themselves and the people that buy their music. Because, in Congress, the golden rule applies, always,(he who has the gold makes the rules), the RIAA has managed to get laws passed that protect their purses against any and all threats, Did you know that if you go to Branson, Mo, Las Vegas, or some of the other entertainment centers around the US, many of the big named stars from time past cannot sing their own songs because of the royalties they would have to pay if they did include them in their routines because they get pennies on the dollar back from royalty fees? It is absolutely incredible that this situation has gone on like this for years. I do not advocate piracy. That is not the issue here. The issue is that only the customer has the power to tell the RIAA that enough is enough. The only way you can hurt the rich is to hit them in the pocketbook by no longer contributing to their hoards of riches. One other issue concerns me. That is the possiblity of innocent people being charged with a crime, without due process, because someone spoofed their address, or installed a trojan and used their machine as a proxy. They also seem to be tracking down people by their nicks. What's to say there aren't ten people using the same nick? Sheesh!
