When I went to restore an image, Paragon free sees all my drives as *:

Why is that? Does anyone know?

Why doesn't it show them as drive letters, e.g C: and D: etc?

When I created the image in W7, Paragon was showing all the drives as C:, D: etc with volume names etc. So why isn't the rescue/restore DVD doing that?

Only that any bootable "rescue" environment may not neccessarily assign drive (partition) letters in the same way and in the same order as they are assigned by the OS that is usually used. That's why it's always wise to assign and double check your own volume labels for any restore operation rather than relying on drive letters alone.

But some drive letters are almost always assigned to all normal partitions during any system startup process. Have no idea at all why you're seeing only asterisks.

Yes, Windows and Linux don't always end up with the same assignments but it gets sorted out.

Do you see things like SDA1, SDA2, SDB2 those are the Linux drive/partition identifiers? Regardless, Paragon should be assigning drive letters.

Did it ever work, could be the Linux is choking on something in your HW configuration.

My partitions DO have volume labels, and they show up correctly in Paragon in Windows when creating an image. But when I boot the restore DVD, all the partitions just show as *: and no drive letters are shown and no partition labels are shown either.

    Why?

I don't see any drive letters or volume labels or SDA1 etc. All the linux Paragon rescue DVD shows is *:

What do you suggest I do now?:doubt:

Ask Paragon support. You'll have to go through the support route, Paragon staff don't seem to monitor this forum at all.

I won't bother, the last time I sent paragon support an email, it took forever for them to reply.:thumbd:

I just installed the Giveawayoftheday Paragon Compact Edition which they are giving away for free atm, and it WORKS!:D

The rescue and boot CD that the compact edition creates sees my drives correctly and it restored 2 of my partitions correctly. So it's obviously very different from the free version, yet still uses the linux drivers I believe.

    Very happy. :thumb:

Glad you found a solution and you were lucky it was offered when you looked at giveawayoftheday. I'm not overly surprised that a different version of the recovery program worked. Fortunately it was also able to read the archive file format.

I didn't know they had a "Compact" version, they already have too many products that almost do the same thing.

You got that right, for sure. Looks to me like the HDM 11 Suite has it all together in one package, but I'm not even sure about that. They really need to consolidate at least some of their product purchase options. Very confusing for us "noobs" around here. :)

    Who you calling noob? :argh:

But yeah, I agree. And it's amazing how the free Paragon could not read my drives properly when booting of the created boot CD, but when I created a boot CD from the compact version, the boot CD is different and looks very different and reads all my partitions and drives properly and is able to restore properly.

Paragon should fix their free version because many people evaluate their product using the free version and if the free version ain't detecting drives properly using the boot CD, then many people will assume ALL their products fail as well. Not very smart of Paragon to do this, and may end up costing them a lot of money in loss of sales. o_O

Mainly myself. Well, definitely a "noob" here with Paragon. Was using Acronis :gack: until I finally got fed up with their OS-crippling drivers that are almost impossible to get rid of without manual registry editing. :thumbd:

Well according to that, I am a noob too then :D

I bought Acronis years ago, it did work for my basic backingup and restoring on Vista, but when I got a new laptop with W7, I had to get a new program, so I thought I use Paragon free instead of paying more money for Acronis.

The free give away of the day Paragon compact edition came to my rescue :thumb: :argh: The GOTD website says it sells for $39 but I got it for free, very happy.
