I doubt it will run better than MyDefrag or Piriform Defraggler, considering how old is that v10 piece of software compared with the newest versions of the previously mentioned freeware apps.

When I booted my computer this morning O&O Defrag did a pre boot defrag of my 2 hard drives. You don't get that option on many of the free programs.

I know it is a older version, but as far as I'm concerned it's doing a good job on my computer.

guest, I'd normally agree with you, but as far as I can tell, version 10 looks identical to the most recent version, and has the 'ribbon' toolbar, meaning, it's not old software (I'm guessing over a year old+).

I'm a big fan of mydefrag/jkdefrag compared to the standard windows defrag tool, that is you notice a difference. With O&O, and puran, you notice the same difference between them and mydefrag (bootup time, speed in opening programs, hard disk activity etc).

Give it a try. It seems to uninstall with no dramas.

I used PerfectDisk latest version here during the trial time and then I switched back to MyDefrag.

The performance remained always the same. These commercial defrag tools talk big and do small.

And for those who don't know, this v10 from O&O Defrag Pro came out in May/2007. The latest version, v12, was released in April/2009.

It does not work with the free license key for ver 10. I tried it and here is the response:

"Unfortunately, the license code you entered does not match the criteria required for a free copy of O&O Defrag 11 Professional Edition."

You say 'apparently', so I assume what you've said is apparently not true :'(

Does the bootime defrag only defrag the system files of the harddisk or does it do a full defrag of the harddisk, ie all the files/folders including the system files?

I can only assume that it defrags the hard drives since it defraged my second drive and it's only a storage drive for various programs I've downloaded and saved through the years.

Background can be turned off, just the one button. You can close the program by right-clicking on tray icon and selecting exit.

Puran on the other hand, might be more suited, by default it's on-demand.

V12 is good, but it seems to be always running in the background (same with V10), using around 8-10MB of memory and sitting in the task tray. I checked and couldn't get it to disable loading at startup - I know how to disable it as a autorun, but thought they'd include this feature in their program - a checkbox to not startup automatically. If I exit O&O, shut it down in the task tray, and kill the service, the way to start it again would be to re-boot.

To schedule a boot scan, you have to add a new job and find the feature in there.

O&O would be good for people who have a hard drive operating at its full capacity, dealing with large files on a daily basis, and want automatic defrag.

Puran on the other hand, has the most simple interface, has a boot scan feature which can restart, defrag, and shutdown (or restart), and doesn't need to run in the background.

See this thread and screenshot with the boot time feature for Puran.
    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=258802&page=2

Ease of use, simplicity and overall system boost, I'd go Puran. O&O to me would be next best (just not a fan of a defrag program running in the system tray, but then again, some may want this as it reminds you to check out the status of your drive and defrag it often).

try jv16's startup tools.. it kills the startup of anything i have thrown at it and does not put windows into a different boot type. it actually removes it.

what about in its program folder? no way to make a shortcut to start the program without rebooting? that seems stupid imo. how is it to uninstall i may try it if it does a good uninstall or maybe ill just make a backup then restore back afterwards

When you close the program (right-click and exit in task tray), one service is still running in the background. When I use hijackfree to kill it, the program can't restart.

So I used hijackfree to start the O&O service again manually, it restarts and says it is running, and the program opens, but it won't allow you to defrag.

Not that a small process running in the background is an issue, it's not, just pointing out that most programs that I kill/end, you'd think would be easily restarted.

I'll try disabling the startup entry, and seeing if the program will still work after reboot. Will report back. :D

zfactor, just used ccleaner to disable the autorun of oodtray.exe, and all ok.

No startup. The process oodag.exe still runs in the background, using 4mb of memory, but the program starts and closes fine.

    Overall, that's acceptable. :)

icr, from using various defrag programs, you usually give it a day or so to see the results. The only problem I had with ultimate defrag, data execution prevention kept terminating the process.

Well, I'm currently trying out this freebie version. The way I use it is by using a couple of system internals apps (psservice and psexec) and running the commands as a batch so that I don't have O&O's service and tray processes running all the time.

Quite good from a newbie point-of-view and runs defrags a bit faster than ultimatedefrag freebie although I'm still reluctant to use its boot defrag feature. I don't want to startup my pc and wait for it to finish defragging the whole hd unless someone points out to me that the boot defrag option only defrags system files :D

See help file details on offline defrag below. I've used it a few times, with no problems. Works faster than the standard defrag.

Otherwise, for those interested, you can enable offline deframentation through the settings tab at next bootup:

Or through the add job, where you can select to shutdown after for example.

One question about defraggers: how to use them with backup programs?
I have set Macrium Reflect to do nightly incrementals and full backup once a week.

These nightly incrementals will grow dramatically after using defrag proggie.
Any suggestions how to use these two together? o_O

If u have Rollback Rx or programs like that , dont use it.
There is no problem with back up programs . Just do manual defragging whenever essential:)

just uninstalled this well version 12. dont get me wrong it is a nice program but i saw little difference other than the features when compared to puran. yes this has the screensaver, and the auto service running. so i guess if you want that this will be nice for you actually i think i liked this (v12) better than perfectdisk but for me the tiny 3mb puran went back on. i saw no performance differences in the overall system and tested with both puran and this and each said 0% after defraging with either one so they both did the same overall job. the screensaver for me didnt always work right and locked up once. just to many extra options and features for me for a defrag program i like the simplicity of puran and its a one purpose tool they did not try to include everything under the sun in it. the o&oeven has different themes etc.. im its a defrag program why do i need different themes lol?

i liked it overall though just a bit overdone for my tastes but as i said this will replace perfectdisk for my second go to choice i think.

Nikanthpromod, thanks for this nice opportunity! Saraceno I completely agree with you, O&O and Puran are in a different league than Mydefrag. I prefer Puran for its simplicity, but O&O free is hard to beat, and my XP Pro SP3 is certainly older than May 2007.
