Norton Power Eraser.

To me it will be a fantastic tool. I'll probably download it and test it tonight if I have time. It goes to prove that Anti-virus companies especially Symantec are starting to go after these nasty rogues with a vengeance, Kudos to Symantec.

Nonetheless, with Power Eraser I'm starting to believe that Symantec is going after MBAM and SAS market share; There is no doubt in my mind after reading the description provided by Symantec of Power Eraser that MBAM is targeted.

Power Eraser:

"Eliminate deeply embedded and difficult to remove crimeware that traditional antivirus scanning can't reach" Is this not what MBAM suppose to do?

Not directly a MBAM opponent I think. MBAM did focus on rogues (it was called RogueRemover), but now it is more than that: a second-opinion tool, a second layer.

"You should use Power Eraser only when nothing else will remove the threat and you are willing to accept the risk that the scanner may quarantine a legitimate program."

I am not sure what Norton really aims at: it is clear that all av's (ESET for example and also Norton, otherwise they wouldn't have made this) have problems with rogues/crimeware/scareware, because they are not real malware but just fricking annoying.
It looks like these two tools (Power Eraser and Rescue Disc) are just rescue tools like they call it themselves (and probably other security companies aswell), when all other things fail.

But I think both will be really useful and good tools (especially when they are portable so you can put them on USB) to save your pc, and it is nice to see Symantec offers free products.

 

Needs a bit of work imo.Scan in normal mode picks up quite a few common programmes as threats ,including USB safely remove and even ashshell.dll ,which is part of avast.

I think they are related. Remember the time when Symantec support staff used MBAM to clean their own customers' computers of rogues. Well then I think that Symantec learned its hard lesson. Therefore, the birth of Power Eraser.

As far as I can tell MBAM is still focusing on what other antivirus would miss; and this is exactly what Power Eraser would also provide. Thus, my conclusion that Symantec Power Eraser would target MBAM's market share.

yeah, also on my PC it reported 13 programs (wrongly) as risks.

 

No risks found.

 

Very nice,simple utility however I had to chuckle when it listed fslx.sys as a possible threat,it's a part of Symantec Application Virtualization !

 

This tool is to precious. Just ran it and to my total delight among other innocuous things it listed as threats: Firefox (3.7a5), Seamonkey, Superantispyware, Zemana, WeatherWatcher, Finjan Secure Browsing, and an essential tool of my trade, UpToDate (Medical).

Thank God it is pre-release.

It can't be worse than the Comodo Cloud Scanner.

 

Ill download it and run a scan and report what FP's it gave me.

EDIT- It detects PrivateFW.

I think MBAM has had their day in the sun. They should have capitalized, sold the company and then gone and relaxed on a beach somewhere. I am sure from Symantec's point of view, MBAM was just a thorn in their side, not a real business threat, and this tool was pretty much their answer. You want aggressive removal of threats (which really is what MBAM is... AGGRESSIVE REMOVAL, because the FP rate is so high), then here you can use this tool which is far more powerful than the signature based MBAM.

There you have it. MBAM is in trouble, though they will never admit it.

 

No . SafeWeb Lite and Norton Eraser will be free because they help Symantec gather information about more and more files * , thus improving the detection in the paid products.

I don't think that MBAM is in trouble. MBAM will continue its business and they will soon gonna add some new features in response to this.

It detect Virustotal uploader as a threat Too many FP

 

I have seen talk on here about false positives with MBAM but in my experience from running scans on many different computers it has never given me a false positive - unlike the majority of antimalware/antispyware software.

 

No FPs with MBAM here, either.

And as for Norton Power Eraser, it's in beta and they clearly state that it's a "when everything else fails" tool:

"You should use Power Eraser only when nothing else will remove the threat and you are willing to accept the risk that the scanner may quarantine a legitimate program."

 

All the immature comments on "can't be free" is driving me crazy. Seriously, just accept the fact that it won't help being a basher forever.
