I've been running NIS on my computers from it's beginning (or the second version), but this may be the last. I'll take a look at Norton Security after it's release, but I'm not encouraged by what I'm hearing. I may finally give Eset a try.

Eset is a good choice. If you buy the smart security your able to downgrade to nod32 antivirus if you like.

Actually I like AV the most. I dont like any addon which bloats and raise the price of the product. With one product its clear for the customers...no confusion.
For me, I will have to check out the details.

I've already switched to ESET after Norton refused to confirm you would be upgraded to the latest product and that licenses customers had purchased but not activated for existing products would be able to be used on the new products. The issue has been very poorly handled in my opinion and I had been a happy customer for quite a few years.

Symantec and Microsoft publicly announced that they would stop assigning resources to cheat in file scan tests as every antivirus company does. Symantec also refused to be tested that way. AV- Comparatives reacted pulling Symantec out of the real time tests too and testing Norton in the file scan test without the full set of definitions activated to make Symantec look bad.

Kaspersky also denounced that everybody cheats in the file scan tests by copying and pasting hashes from Virustotal but, in very cynical move, they didn't deny nor affirm that they use to cheat too.

^The issue you are talking about has several viewpoints with several different tints of glasses, but the gist of the matter with Symantec is that they don't want to maintain the R&D resources required to keep up with such kind of tests (for various reasons). Again, with a focus on cutting costs for 2 years I'd still be wary of this company (Note that MS has been laying off people too as of late).

I used Symantec on various computers for years, and I never knew that I was not using the full set of definitions until the AV-Comparatives test and reading about it here on Wilders. The full set was not the default setting.

The current products already rely on the cloud for maximum protection.

The nine products into one service is not as bad as they make it sound. Three products are being counted twice due to them counting a service (Norton 360 Multi-Device). There will be at least five products. Two for PC. One for Mac. One for Android. One for iOS.

They continue to score well in real-world tests. Even in the last AV-Comparatives one. "Symantec would have earned Advanced+ in this test, with a very high detection rate and few false positives." http://www.securitywatch.pcmag.com/...-antivirus-protection-test-winners-and-losers.

It's far from ideal but Norton Chat Support agents have claimed that once you have bought Norton Security, you can contact them and have the days from your current subscription added on.

It's making a lot of existing NIS 2014 license owners angry cuz it does not appear they will be getting a free upgrade to the latest and greatest.

It's noteworthy that after the big rucus about this on the NIS Forums, Norton changed in Forum design and the original rucus caused by this is well buried and does not include all the posts.

Norton always gave free upgrades during the term of your license to the latest version. Obviously it's a more comprehensive and expensive product, but if it offers better protection it appears that NIS 2014 owners will be getting screwed.

If this new product offers better protection than NIS 2014 and that enhanced protection is not given to NIS license owners in a patch, then it's really a breach of trust and a big customer relations mistake. Peeps bought NIS licenses justifiably relying on it's past practice of always offering free upgrades to the latest and most advanced protection.

One license covers 5 devices and it has components for both Windows and iOS systems and Android and iPhone and iPad protection and online storage among other things.

    http://buy.norton.com/en-au/norton-...bm90ZXMtcnVjeXRpQwgaZXRhcm9nByJ5MDAxMDAwFigw/

This is their Australian site. Not clear if they jumped the gun and its actually available there yet . It covers 5 devices. The rest of the product description is correct.

It was scheduled to be released 9/23 but there is talk that the release has been delayed.

While you are probably right, you are assuming. Norton no longer takes part in AV Comparatives since it disagrees with their testing methods, particularly the on demand tests. Since it refuses to take part in the on demand tests it takes part in no AV Comparative Tests. With AV Comparatives it's all or nothing.

Norton is not the only A/V company to have made such complaints and talks are underway to improve the AV-Comparatives testing methods. Norton's basic complaint about the on demand test is that its process relies to a degree on knowing when and where the file came from and how many are using it. It's on demand is to a degree tied to it's download Insight component among other things.

"Symantec's policy is that a valid antivirus test must exercise the whole product, not just one component. They particularly don't approve of static tests that simply launch a scan and note the percentage of samples detected, and they're not willing to allocate resources just to passing tests. Norton came out OK in AV-Test's certification, but didn't pass the latest from AV-Comparatives."

    I am not assuming.

Quote from http://www.securitywatch.pcmag.com/...-antivirus-protection-test-winners-and-losers: "This time around, AV-Comparatives roped in Symantec and G DATA for testing, for informational purposes. The real-world test is exactly the kind of test Symantec believes should be universal, as it exercises the whole product. Symantec would have earned Advanced+ in this test, with a very high detection rate and few false positives. G DATA would have managed an Advanced rating."

Yeah I see now, but the fact remains that the results are not published and the report is hearsay at best, though as I said, I have no doubt that Norton's results were/would have been top shelf.

So if you are installing on a clean machine you are fine with NIS. On an unknown machine NIS puts you at risk.

I'm using NIS 2014 myself atm. I had been using KIS 2014, but a recent update made it it impossible to access the server for my favorite on-line game with KIS no matter what I did in terms of the firewall with exceptions, white lists. untrusted/ trusted etc.

I had the great distinction of buying a one year's sub to NIS 2 days before Norton made an announcement that implied that NIS would not be upgraded to the NS protection abilities. I use it because it doesn't interfere with anything else on my PC as some others do. However, my confidence in the product is not the highest.

The problem I found with Norton, and continue to find in the MSP is it tends to let PUA/PUA's walk all over systems with it installed. Norton - IMO needs to take a more aggressive stance in that respect. Trend is getting much better, but still needs to improve in this area as well.. Greyware is really annoying, and problematic at times, but also there are immense legal issues with it.The vast majority of Greyware promoters will use legal action if you start detecting them, so you need to be prepared to slug it out as a company. Many companies don't want to risk it. Some (like Trend) are 'walking' closer to the line by the day, and will eventually blacklist all of them as other companies move forward in this revealing the majority of legal threats just that - only threats.

I appreciate Eset, and some other firms for being fairly aggressive at the start.

GOOD LOOKING interface! I really love how companies like Trend and Norton are spending time on their interface.. F-Secure 2015 looks like some kid drew it in MS-Paint.. Bullguard looks bad. But Kaspersky, Norton, and Trend all seem to have some good designs.. I wish Eset would update theirs, it feels dated to me (as an Eset user).

Yeah! The interface is what really matters when in comes to security. That's where a security company's efforts should be focused. If a security product is doing it's job well you should rarely see the interface, though I'll have to admit,Trend did a fantastic job with theirs.

My understanding is you can place your own background on the main interface of NS.

Sorry Mayahana - nothing personal and no offense intended - just a little bitter when it comes to Norton ATM.

It's fine. But realize these companies are compartmentalized. Guys doing interfaces rarely interact with the malware people, if they even see them at all. A few good designers is really all it takes. Trend contracted out with a well known graphic designer, and he designed the interface - alone - from remote, then billed Trend. Very easy, no resources away from the core product! Personally I don't feel there is any excuse for a bad interface given the wealth of design talent you can contract out there.

    I feel your pain though.

I just deleted the post expressing my pain. Two hours after my complaint about the Norton Forums, my posts that I had tried to post there magically appeared.
