Norton 2002 as on-demand only (or AVG)

Is it possible to run Norton 2002 as on-demand only? In other words, not sucking down CPU cycles/memory in the background or resident in any way? I've had both installed at the same time with no problem, but Norton still seems to use significant resources. I'm happy with AVG's resident scanner, it's very light on system resources, but I'd like to do scans once per week with NAV without it taking up system resources constantly.

How about AVG as on-demand only?

If it were me, I would install NAV as the resident, and AVG as the backup. AVG works pretty well as a backup scanner, and is less invasive on your OS. It also manually updates fairly quickly--as I'm sure you've seen.

The resident protection that NAV offers is also far better than AVG--in my opinion. The tradeoff is a bit of bloat.

I use NAV on a win98 box as the resident, with F-Prot for DOS as the backup scanner, so if you have a FAT 16 or 32 setup, that might be an AV option to consider also--plus it's free as well.
