Node.js 15 debuts support for HTTP/3 transport

Node.js 15.0.0, the latest version of the event-driven JavaScript runtime that now has competition from the Deno runtime, was released October 20, with an experimental transport protocol for HTTP/3 and the latest version of the NPM package manager.

Downloadable from Nodejs.org, Node.js 15.0.0 replaces Node.js 14 as the “current” release line, with Node.js promoted to LTS (long-term support) status later this month. Node.js 15, as an odd-numbered release, will not be promoted to LTS status.

Node.js has faced criticism lately from an unlikely source – Node.js creator Ryan Dahl, who has since created Deno to address Node.js shortcomings he has cited such as security.

“My personal opinion is that having other runtime implementations such as Deno helps to drive innovation forwards overall,” she added. “I believe there’s space for them to coexist.”
The Node.js team also noted that Node.js 10 will reach end-of-life status April 21, and advised users to plan upgrades. They have published a technical values document to guide the further development of the platform.

Popular open-source JavaScript runtime Node.js hit version 15 last week, and to bring us up to date we spoke to Michael Dawson, Red Hat Node.js lead, who is also chair of the Node.js Technical Steering Committee and Community Director of the OpenJS Foundation.

So what's new in Node.js 15? One thing is what happens when an async function fails and throws an error outside a catch block.
This has changed so that it will now fail with ERR_UNHANDLED_REJECTION.

"Unhandled rejections can lead to problems that are very difficult to figure out," said Dawson. "This will let developers find them much more easily because your Node project will stop running right, and that's something that you're going to notice."

Node.js uses the same JavaScript engine as the Chromium project, called V8.
Version 15 has an updated N-API. "It brings a couple more methods that help you work with buffers," Dawson said.
Deno – a better Node than Node? TypeScript?
The Node team is aware of Deno, a new server-side JavaScript platform co-authored by Ryan Dahl, who also created Node.js and now says that Deno fixes many of its problems.

"A number of things in Deno are interesting and have been discussed within the project for years."
That said, he is not convinced by all the Deno changes.

I'm not sure, but I believe Vivaldi's GUI was built with this. I never knew you could actually build a user interface with JavaScript.

It is written in React and (mostly) plain JavaScript, yes. With the help of build tools as WebPack and transpilers like Babel. It's also helped with type checkers such as Flow. Lots of cool technologies going on. The UI is not open source, though. [...]

One of the things that makes Vivaldi unique is that it is built on modern web technologies. We use JavaScript and React to create the user interface with the help of Node.js and a long list of NPM modules. Vivaldi is the web built with the web.
