When I click Start>Microsoft Update, it should launch IE and run the update check, but just as IE appears in the taskbar it disappears. I normally use Firefox browser, and only have IE for windows and security updates.

This isn't the only problem I've been having with IE either, and for the past year or so when it is started it appears minimised in the taskbar by default and only opens when I right click mazimise. When I try and "restore down" so the window isn't maximised to full screen, it just minimises to the taskbar again.

Is there some way to repair IE by cleaning it completely from the machine and using my windows 2000 CD to replace it?

I've never found a way to do it. I always get a message that another IE
update is scheduled (or something like that) and please reboot.
After reboot I get the same message ;)

I download updates manually for Win2K

Thanks for the links Global, but they didn't quite fit the solution I was looking for, although it was useful to rule out each one.

    I found the following solution:
Repair or Reinstall Internet Explorer6 and Outlook Express 6
. I had used it a long time ago when OE was damaged after a service pack was added, and forgot about it.

I used the System File Checker (method 1 in the link), which I mistakenly thought before, for whatever reason that it only applied to winxp, and it prompted for the windows cd. After the check (which takes about 10mins) I rebooted. Then I opened IE, and when it appeared in the taskbar I right clicked maximise. Then when I tried to 'restore down' it didn't disappear completely this time and a postage stamp sized IE icon appeared on the far right of the screen. I left clicked, then chose size and dragged the window out to the required size, HEY PRESTO! Job jobbed! :D

    np GF mate! ;)

One last qt, (might be dumb)... since I used the checker to find corrupted files and replace them from the win2k cd, is there any way I have reverted any security settings or patches to unsafe settings?

I ran the custom scan with microsoft update and no high priority security patches appeared so I assume I'm safe. 2 other updates were offered; I ignored the update for Base Smart Card Cryptographic Service Provider KB909520, since I don't know what the smart card is, but I did dl the .NET Framework 2.0 update KB829019. I think this is ok, yes?

    Hi Caine,

Running filechecker isn't supposed to set anything back, that would be an in place repair as I remember. Don't quote me here cause I'm not any security advisor :D if the M$ scanner say's your all patched I would think that's the best. As far as double checking IE setting's you'll find a thorough overview here ....

    http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/btw/ie/ie-opts.htm

.... along with several other goodies. Using OE is feesible if your careful, but you may want to investigate some other e-mail client's supported by member's on the forum to *tighten up* any loose end's. Use the search function. ;)
