Despite a second version of PowerToys being released for Windows XP in 2002, not a lot more has happened for subsequent versions of Windows. Now, that is set to change with Microsoft signaling the introduction of two new utilities for Windows 10.

According to the GitHub repository for PowerToys, one of the first cabs off the rank will be a new maximize to new desktop (MTND) widget. With this tool installed, users can hover the mouse cursor over a window's maximize button which, as the name implies, will allow users to send the window maximized to a new desktop when clicked.

The second PowerToy on the cards is the "Windows key shortcut guide" which can be invoked by holding down the Window key for more than a second. The shortcuts that will be displayed will be sensitive to the present desktop context.

Microsoft announced today that the first preview release of PowerToys utilities for Windows 10 is now available for download, together with docs and tools that will make it simple to create new PowerToys apps.

The Windows 10 PowerToys released today are inspired by the Windows 95 era PowerToys project and they provide "power users with utilities to squeeze more efficiency out of the Windows 10 shell and customize it for individual workflows," according to Brandon LeBlanc, Microsoft Senior Program Manager on the Windows Insider Program Team.
To get started with the new Windows 10 PowerToys, you have to download the installer from here, install them on your device, and then access them via the PowerToys icon added to the system tray.

"The project started with just an empty repo, with a roadmap and a place for power users to provide suggestions and ideas. However, over 4000 users starred the repo, showing a strong interest in the project."

FancyZones
Changes:

Removed legacy editor (along with the settings option to choose between the legacy editor and the new editor).

Added a settings to disable FanzyZones for user defined list of applications.

The editor now opens highlighting the current active layout.

Show the correct keyboard key for the editor shortcut (with some limitations due to the WebView control).

Bug fixes:

Fixed the FancyZones bug that was stealing the number keys (mostly happening when dragging Chrome tabs).

Fixed a DPI scaling bug in the FancyZones editor that was causing the zones to be placed in the wrong position on the screen.

Fixed bug preventing several apps from working with FancyZones (there are still some cases, like remote apps, that may not work).

PowerRename
Changes:

The dialog can be resized (still need to finished the work to handle DPI changes when moving the dialog between screen with different scaling %).

Added settings to restore search and replace flags value from previous run.

Added settings to enable autocomplete and auto-suggest.

Bug fixes:

Improved RegEx replace result.

Fix bug preventing sub-folder items to be renamed if parent folder is also renamed.

Other bug fixes

fixed a bug in the runner that was causing the tray icon to not appear.

minor UI tweaks to the Settings appearance (icons position and margins, module's description text and documentation links position and margins).

fixed a crash in the SortcutGuide.

NOTE: when upgrading from a previous version, the installer will close all the Windows Explorer windows in order to update the PowerRename shell extension.

Microsoft is working on a quick launcher dubbed PowerLauncher for the Windows 10 open-source PowerToys toolset, to allow users to launch apps faster than using the Start menu.

"PowerToys is mainly targeted towards Windows power users though it is available to users who want to experience using Windows in a more efficient and productive way," Microsoft program manager Jessica Yuwono says on the PowerLauncher's GitHub entry.
Microsoft is also planning to address Windows users' need for a faster and more reliable launcher with this new PowerToy.

PowerLauncher will also come with additional capabilities including but not limited to auto-completion, search history, context menu, suggestions while typing, and running apps in administrator mode or opening PowerShell instances.
PowerLauncher will be available only for Windows 10 users and it "should be faster than start menu/Win+S for showing the search result and launching applications."

Windows 10 does allow users to remap the keys on your keyboard with a few registry tweaks, but Registry editor isn’t exactly an easy tool to customize the operating system and bend it to your will, which is why there is a market for third-party software like SharpKeys that writes this information directly to the registry.

It appears that Microsoft is also working on a Keyboard Manager for PowerToys, so you don’t have to rely on some other software as a middleman.
Microsoft’s PowerToys team has quietly revealed that they are working on a new tool that would allow you to remap the keys.

“For developers and some seasoned users, where using their keyboard is a large part their job, ability to remap keystrokes and engage executables can lead to massive gains in time. In fact, this was the second most popular topic measured through thumbs up and the most commented issue in the PowerToys Github,” Microsoft said.
Microsoft is also planning to add support to edit app-level shortcuts.

It's been almost three months since the last major update to Microsoft's PowerToys, but today, version 0.15 is out. Microsoft has taken the extra time to deliver a slew of quality updates that promise to make the overall experience better.

One of the big additions in this release is the ability for PowerToys to automatically check for updates and warn the user when a new version is available. Additionally, you no longer need to run the app as an administrator every time.
The team has also worked on documentation, cleaning up the list of issues on GitHub, and drafting up a number of documents. A strategy for version 1.0 has been outlined here, and specs for a launcher and a keyboard manager have been published in the respective links.

Microsoft is adding a new toy to the next release of their new PowerToys for Windows 10.

In their latest Preview Release, version 0.16, Microsoft is looking to add an Image Resizer to the collection.
ImageResizer used to be part of the original PowerToys collection and allowed users to resize multiple images at the same time, useful when uploading or emailing them for example.

One of the interesting things about version three of the tool is that it is open source and you can access all the codes on GitHub. The release date of version 0.16 is not known yet, bit is likely to be in the near future.

Microsoft updated the open-source Windows 10 PowerToys toolset with new utilities for quickly switching between windows, for previewing files in Windows Explorer, and for batch resizing images from the context menu.

The three new tools named Window Walker, PowerPreview, and Image Resizer come together with FancyZone improvements and over 100 bugfixes.

The newly added Image Resizer PowerToy is a Windows shell extension that helps resize large numbers of files using search and replace, and it also provides regular expressions support to replace filename parts easier.

Boost your Windows File Explorer's preview pane
This new PowerToys release also adds custom preview handlers under the PowerPreview moniker that will allow you to get a quick preview of SVG images and Markdown documents (for now).

"Preview handlers are called when an item is selected to show a lightweight, rich, read-only preview of the file's contents in the view's reading pane," Microsoft explains. "This is done without launching the file's associated application."

Today, the Redmond giant is releasing PowerToys version 0.17.

The major new feature in today’s release is the ability for the tool to auto-update. However, the feature can be tried out only when version 0.18 is made available to users. Users have to click ‘install’ to initiate the installer for now and the firm is expecting feedback from users for this feature.
In addition to the auto-update feature, the release contains improvements to FancyZone that was caused by an underlying issue. The company prioritized the fixes for this tool based on the feedback it received. There are also some minor fixes listed in the changelog.

Our goals for 0.17 release cycle was updatability and stability.

Auto-updating: We just added in the code for doing updating, so the first chance to experience this will be when 0.18 is release. We’re also seeing how aggressive everyone wants with this so right now, you’ll have to click “Install” for it to kick off the installer. This is something we’d love feedback on.

Another thing we did was utilized telemetry from PowerToys to prioritize virtual desktop FancyZone work. We knew there was a subset of bugs caused by an underlying issue and seeing how many users it affected helped us reprioritize to do the work sooner.

We’d like to also directly say thank you to the community for helping out. This release has multiple fixes contributed by you.

This is patch release to fix a few items for 0.18. This release fixes a problem when PowerToys was run elevated and a ripple effect with PowerToys Run then being elevated as well. Today’s updates contain fixes to the Run and FancyZones feature. The fixes are minor and few.
One of the known issues that persist is the problem that prevents users from opening the tool’s settings when it is closed in a minimized state from the taskbar. The company has promised a fix for that issue in the next major update, version 0.20.

Since the beloved PowerToys was resurrected for Windows 10, Microsoft has been busy pushing out new versions with fixes and new tools -- although it has been a little while since new utilities were added.

With PowerToys v0.20, however, this change. Not only are there the bug fixes and improvements you'd expect in a new version, there is also a new tool to play with: ColorPicker.
The bad news is that PowerToys v0.20 is not available right now -- but it's really not far off.

Microsoft has released a new update for PowerToys. The latest update bumps the app to v0.20.1 and brings fixes and improvements to the app.
Just last week Microsoft updated PowerToys to v0.20 and this update is aimed at addressing some of the issues and bugs with the update.

Microsoft release PowerToys 0.22.0 with new Video Conferencing Muting tool

Today Microsoft released two versions of their new PowerToys utility for Windows 10.

Release v0.21.1 mainly contains a host of bug fixes, but a new experimental Release v0.22.0 brings a brand-new toy, designed to make muting audio and video easier on Windows 10, no matter which video conferencing app you are using.
The new utility will mute not just your audio but your video as well with a single keystroke. You can do audio, video both.

Unfortunately with certain laptops currently the video forwarding does not work, and due to this Microsoft is only putting this in a pre-release installer for PowerToys. Microsoft is however proactively trying to fix the issue.

PowerToys 0.23 focuses on bug fixes, video conference tool coming later

Microsoft has released a new update for PowerToys, the collection of customization tools aimed at Windows 10 power users. The app is now at version 0.23, but this release is focused entirely on bug fixes and other smaller improvements, and nothing in the way of new features.

In fact, even the video conference tool, which allows users to set certain shortcuts to mute their microphone or turn off their webcam, isn't available yet. It debuted in the experimental release of PowerToys version 0.22, and it will come back in version 0.24, another experiemental release coming next week.
With that being said, version 0.23 includes plenty of fixes, both for the PowerToys app as a while and for many of its sub-apps.

Microsoft wants you to vote for what the next PowerToys utilities should be

The development of PowerToys for Windows 10 has been impressive, with Microsoft continuing to add new utilities all the time. Now the company is looking for feedback from users to help decide just what it should focus on next.

Specifically, the development team says that while it currently has ideas for three new PowerToys, it only has time to work on two of them next year. Rather than making the decision itself, power users are being asked to vote, choosing between a Gif/Video screen recorder, the ability to adjust font rendering, and a tool called "Mouse without borders".

Really, however, it seems that there is only a choice between two as the Gif/Video screen recorder tool is already underway. So, the choice is between adjusting font rendering in Windows 10, and the OSS Mouse Without Borders tool.

The ability to tweak font rendering is described over on GitHub and sounds very much like the ClearType settings of old. On the PowerToys roadmap, the only mention of a mouse-related tool is described as a "Mac Style 'Find cursor' ease of access (shake to find)" utility. [...]
