'Windows 8 in particularly being seen as a big bet with no guarantee of success.'

    I'll say ...

maybe 600 million computers where sold, I doubt 600 million actual copies of windows 7 where sold (at full retail price) at the store then installed by joe sixpack.
When people buy a computer they have no choice what software is installed. It is always going to be windows 7.
They probably also sold 600 million copies of vista.
Does this mean windows 7 is a success? it just means 600 million computers where sold.

Geez am I ever a slow adopter, having just purchased a computer with W7 on it. If it wasn't for so many others out there like me, the 600 million figure would be considerably higher.
Still shaking my head at the thought of purchasing an OS 2½ years after it hit the shelves.

600 million license activations is really how it should be reported, because that's 99% likely what they are counting. They didn't sell 600 million shrink-wrapped boxes of Win 7, which, in all fairness, was not the title of the thread, so not incorrect. I'd say even without counting licenses Win 7 is a success. I'm sure it'll take that many years again for Win 8 to be counted a success (if Win 8 even becomes one).

The article and title of this thread states licences, not retail copies or anything else.

    What about Macs ?

    Cheers, Nick.

Its still a valid alternative to buying Windows with a PC.

If by "people" you mean average Joe going into the high street shop, then yeah. You can easily buy computers online with no OS at all.
