Yep, that's a lot of builds. You could include the "nightlies" and go up into the hundreds, but no one is requiring us to use all of them so I don't feel it matters. We get to determine if and when we update. I have a friend who is still using v17 with updates turned off.

If I'm understanding you correctly you feel that the shorter development cycle results in shoddy coding...? I guess that's possible but I don't know how to assess it. Was the browser more stable or better in other respects when it was on a longer cycle? Other people who actually work with code can perhaps comment on this.

 

Mozilla ESR is used in TenFourFox because the developers don't want a rapid release cycle. The oldest version of FF on the Mac Power PC is 3.6 which was the last build for this processor but the community-driven branch has updated it to ESR 24.0, which is the latest long-term stable build.

 

No not "shoddy coding". I don't think it has anything to do with quality. I am referring to quantity. Too many builds with too little changes.

 

Rapid release has bug and security fixes.

ESR has stability and security fixes.


So if you want long term deployment, ESR is the better way to go, especially on low powered or very old hardware.

Isn't this version (27) supposed to be the one that supports native HTML5 too? I won't be DL'ing it until I update Windows.

 

v3.76 also breaks Sandboxie, just so you know. So I'm willing to bet this is a pretty universal thing. I've now seen it on every box I work on that runs SBIE... various versions, and the same result (Firefox crash). A SBIE prompt came up saying something about a COM error.

Well, Tzuk would have this fixed by the next day. Now we'll see how long it takes to fix a major problem like this with him no longer the man. I feared this day.

And it looks like I've now been given incentive to update to the newest version of Sandboxie, assuming they remedy this.

Seems it could be a FF problem though, actually, in which case I hope there's communication there to get it done. I actually hope it's something FF has to patch instead because I want to keep my SBIE 3.76.

So in the meantime I'm staying with FF v26, and SBIE 3.76. If someone hears of a fix please post about it here.

None here either with that setup. Well there wasn't anyway until I morphed to Cyberfox v27 and still no issues.

 

Updated FF to v27 this afternoon. Everything running fine.

Some people can run FF27 in Sandboxie without a problem; others are finding that FF27 won't open.

For those who find that FF27 doesn't open for them in Sandboxie, here's a work-around you can try: adjust FF's Properties (RIGHT-click on FF, select PROPERTIES), go to the COMPATIBILITY tab, and check the box to "DISABLE VISUAL THEMES" (WinXP, Win7). [I believe it may be called "best performance visual settings" in Win8, but I'm not sure.]

Click APPLY, then OK. FF should then run in Sandboxie.

Did this work for those having a problem with FF27 and Sandboxie. The update to FF27 didn't cause a problem for me with Sandboxie, but FF27.0.1 did. I reverted to a backup image made before installing FF27.0.1 so I can't try the workaround at the moment.

The suggested work-around is working for many people, myself included... but I can't guarantee it will work for everyone.

What's nice about it is that it's simple enough to enable/try, and just as easy to undo, if it doesn't work for you.

By the way, it's not just a clear-cut FF+Sandboxie issue. Rather, all indications are that the conflict is the result of a "triple combination" of FF+Sandboxie+"a 3rd-party program which acts as a catalyst". Running any two together works fine... it's the combination of all 3 that yields a conflict. One such known catalyst for this problem is avast 2014 (but not avast 8 )... but it's not the only catalyst.

As such, since ff27 ran for you in Sandboxie, but ff27.0.1 did not, I would speculate that you also changed something else, introducing [a possibly yet-unknown] catalyst program to your system sometime between the two FF versions.

You certainly have different choices in Win8.1 than do Win7/XP users. If you wish to experiment (which is how other people stumbled on work-arounds), you might try the settings available to you there, one-by-one, to see what happens.

I see you DO have an option to "run this program in compatibility mode for", with a drop-down menu to choose from. My suggestion is that you try these, going from the most recent (Win8 ) back as far as you feel comfortable testing.

I've found that running in Win2000 compatibility mode (on a XP system) does the trick. Someone else even reported that running a Win7 system using Win7 compatibility mode worked! (That's not a typo, win7 compat. in win7.) So, if you're willing, you can give it a shot. It's easy enough to undo any of these changes, if nothing works for you. If you try, please let us know the results.
