    Correct!

It will exactly will give you the same WinPE v3.1 like the paid version with no differences. The only difference with the paid version will be that you can install the paid version into the boot menu on boot-up, thus not requiring the rescue CD.

    Best regards,

Lots of people have the Shadow Protect rescue CD on this forum, which they requested as demo version.

BTW, Skully has created WinPE v3.1, with the free version 4.2 of Macruim Reflect, with the plugins provided on their site.

This is even available in his boot menu on boot up, based on Grub4DOS.

imo the "upgrade" lic thing sucks. i have got stuck twice now on 2 different clients systems where it would not accept the 4.2 key and i have to contact them. when you buy the upgrade it seems the only way to get the v5 installed is to use the old 4.2 key and it will update or am i missing something?

Right, I didn't try OCR boot media yet, but I did try the more complete version, Keriver 5, and last time I did, the boot media was winpe but allowing only backup & restore. Did that change too ? Thanks.

    Dear Aaron,

I just burned the WinPE v3.1 boot disk of Macrium Reflect v5.00. I don't have the paid version, as I have not upgraded my current v4.2

I can confirm it has all the options, including Backup, Restore, Browse, Command Prompt and so forth.

I already have WAIK installed on my computer when I created the WinPE boot disk of IFW. It created the Macrium Reflect v5 WinPE without any problem. Though, the only options I got is to burn the CD/DVD or burn it on USB, it didn't give the option to save it as an ISO.

I even went ahead and tried the backup, it imaged without a hitch.

    Best regards,

    KOR!

BTW, I learned from Nick from the Macrium Reflect support that there is a difference between Cold and Hot imaging of Macrium Reflect.

The Cold imaging includes all the restore points, but the Hot imaging doesn't. Therefore, there is a size difference between the two based on how much the space is occupied the restore points.

It came up automatically with the announcement, maybe because I bought it like 3-4 months ago IIRC.

Yes, it is in the trail version. But if you do cold imaging with free custom WinPE, I doubt it that it will restore the image after 30 days. Macrium Reflect images are date/time stamped.

I also doubt that its free because it downloads trail winpe files
but i will check it later by changing bios date.

    yeah thats how i'm feeling

Macrium Reflect is the best .

    But

Awkward to learn, its like its made by programmers who don't ask users about things

take the complaints about the new file backup being 'clunky'

its all "XML and VBS and shadow copy"

not "i want to back up my computer i use for fun or work."

i have a complicated backup setup that i runs like clockwork

i dont want to F it up :)

also i run a daily backup

with their new feature of restoring and restarting the computer
my backup would run and overwrite the 1 image i keep on my computer.

so i'd have to baby sit the computer till reboot and stop the backup running. not too cool.

i would have bought it to support the developers, but i got enough silly changes to deal with in life :ninja: o_O

people are saying things are in odd places in the new version

    its "deja-learing curve" again ....... i bet :)

I completely understand the desire for Macrium to have a native ability to create boot cds. I also appreciate the desire to have a boot cd with an option to create an image instead of just restore it. As well, incremental images sounds quite enticing. I have thought about purchasing in the past to get some of these things, but since I made my boot cd from Win7RescuePE project and got my macrium PE plugin to work in that easily, I have not pursued it any further.

It is a loss sometimes only being able to restore an image from PE, but thus far I have managed.

I know the linux based boot cd is very spartan, exactly what is needed for a quick restore, and I use one sometimes. But I am much more keen on making my own PE with the tools/options I want onboard and just including the Macrium PE Plugin into my own PE.

I would suggest that if you can live without creating images from a PE, you look into rolling your own PE. There are many different methods available for many different "versions" of PE, with many so refined it is very easy to add/remove applications/tools. It might not be for everyone, but once you get it working on your hardware, it can be very productive because it is customized for you and your hardware.

There is a lot of infos available for those that want to pursue this further.

I will wait and see how others find this version of Macrium before I even test it myself, as I don't really need anything different at the moment.

    Sul.

Keep in mind that most who visit forums are here to complain. They rarely visit the give accolades. So, before you take it to heart about GUI complaints, try it for yourself. Myself, I prefer V5.

Regarding the boot discs creation, the build tool is included in V5. To build a WinPE 3.1 disc, this does require a free download from Microsoft which Macrium automates for you. They make it easy to build a boot disc in V5.

Plus with V5 the WinPE boot disc can do a lot more than restore images.

WinPE 3.1 is based on Win7 SP1 so its the newest available.

Personally I recommend V5 Pro for desktop use which includes dissimilar hardware restore.

I paid $100 for Macrium Reflect about six months ago and they gave me WinPE 2.1, where as everyone at that time was giving WinPE v3.1

Now, I have to pay $60 for upgrade to WinPE v3.1, which should have been given to me six months ago, when I made the original purchase.

    Go figure!

WinPE v2.1 is based on Windows Vista. When was Windows Vista out?

WinPE v3.1 is based on Windows 7. When was Windows 7 out?

    Go figure!

Reflect V5 Hot imaging definitely restores at least some restore points. I just restored an XP test system and there's at least 10 restore points available. Maybe not all, but some are definitely there.

When I'm done testing the restore, I will return to the original HDD and see how many other restore points appear. Will report back.
