Any suggestions out there on what Registry Cleaners work well and are FREE?
I've done the usual Google Search and they will all give you a FREE Scan,
    but not free CLEAN.
Advanced Optimizer is rated number one on one review list, but the list may be
    prejudiced towards that product.
Some months ago I downloaded it for a free 30 day trial, but I don't remember
whether or not I could clean with it.
It was pretty complicated to understand quickly.
I'm quite busy and can't spend a lot of time falling down "black holes" to learn
all these programs, but will take the time if I know a program is worth it.

or post here and I'll try to monitor this site
I'm a first time poster and just downloaded SPYWAREBLASTER which is
what got me to this forum.

Today is a "find the utilities" day as it's about time to clean up my computer
which is slowing down with all the crap that gets in even with DAILY scans with
Adaware, Spybot, TrendMicro, Daily Defrags (XP), and Disc Cleanup (XP)

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Go The Data List and select 'Registry Cleaners'.

    My personal preference is RegSeeker.

Regseeker is very good, as is the last free version of jv16 power tools.

I experienced at least one known issue after using RegSeeker & was fortunate enough to notice this problem the next day. When I attempted to merge any backups back into the registry .... for some reason RegSeeker did NOT perform this task.

By performing a System Restore to before the time I ran RegSeeker my issue was resolved. Since I'm not an advanced user I have been very reluctant to use ANY of these registry cleaners since. As another member at Wilders says .... better to have some useless or obsolete entries than removing " one needed entry " that could cause serious problems with your operating system.

I do agree, at least in part. When it comes to registry cleaners, it's a lot better to do some research and buy one. JV16's (Power Tools, RegSupreme Pro, and RegSupreme) registry cleaners are actually quite safe. They connect to a central database and will download rules of which keys are not safe to delete. If you restore one of it's backups it will ask you to submit it to the database and why, so you benefit from everyone else's decisions :) RegSupreme is their cheapest at $13, but only does registry cleaning. RegSupreme Pro is around $5 more, and has some nice additional tools as well. It's one of my favorite apps :) Free cleaners can be handy, though, if you know what to look for. Although you can sometimes run in to problems, they can also fix problems as well.

For years I have been using Reg Seeker along with other regcleaner tools and till now, I have not suffered from any problems, the latest Reg Seeker shows you safe and unsafe keys to delete and also backs up your previous registry so its quite easy to revert back to original one in case some problems occur after cleaning.

I am using Regseeker, I delete all the green entrys. If I delete any red I am very carefull and make a backup, I have noticed the merging problem that Hard Rocker mentioned. I just tryed it over and over untill it worked.

I had JV16, I was using it untill I got a error message on JV16s startup. That the software was no longer freeware and I would have to buy a licence and the program refused to open.

I like to go to a software download center that also rates the software, so you have a idea what is better than what before you download. I go to http://www.snapfiles.com/ at the moment or http://www.majorgeeks.com/. But in any case I go to the Companys website to see what other info I can get.

If you have programs like Aplac, Autocad, Matlab, Office 2003 ,etc. My advice forget the registry cleaning at all. Work as if there are no "registry cleaners"

If you insist on free, then RegSeeker. However, unless a user is pretty much an expert, you'd best pay the bill for *safe yet effective* -- namely, Ace Utilities (~$24 after applying 20% discount at DOZLENG).

GF .... This was about 6 months ago and after my problem was resolved I removed RegSeeker from my PC so I can't tell you what version of the program I had at this point in time. All I can tell you is that it WAS the most up to date version at the time I used the program.

You can also try RegScrubXP, as it only scans and finds the "outer layer" of the registry problems and considered to be safe to removed. Use only the button find probem and fix problem. ;)

I just wonder if registry cleaners are actually useful.

I tried regseeker and it found hundreds of entries to remove. I removed them all and I didn't notice any difference at all in my computers performance. I don't think I actually achieved anything by cleaning my registry.

I would say if it's working ok leave it alone. Many people spend more time using utilities than using the computer. That's why there is such a big market.
Just do a backup while it's working ok
If going to use one ccleaner does seem to be pretty safe not as agressive to try to remove things just because it did not know what it was.

Same experience and same opinion. I wouldn't spend any money on a registry cleaner and some of them have false positives, which is dangerous for less-knowledgeable users.
Better 10 registries too many, than one too short is my philosophy.

I quite often have to find and edit and delete registry keys, which I will do manually, JV16 powertools 1.3 (the last free version) is great for this, already linked to the last free versions.
I've never found the need to run an automated reg cleaner, maybe just luck.

I had to re-install these programs on many occasions after using registry cleaners.

use TU2 (totaluninstall) for ex. OR system restore

Cleaning your registry could be beneficial to the stability of your system if u install/uninstall many softwares. But of course there is a risk to consider since it could really mess up your system. One way to avoid the "problem" is to use restore software (e.g. totaluninstall). I´ve tested several registry cleaners, and the safest ones is the ones that finds lesser keys to delete and also finds the same amount of keys when u are making a re-scan (without deleting the first time of course...). My top three list regarding the "safe-to-delete" view is:

    1. CCleaner (not a real reg. cleaner, but it is really safe to use)
    2. EasyCleaner (low detection rate of keys, very safe to use but do not use the duplicate tool)
    3. jv16pt/RegSupreme (In normal mode, very safe)

RegSeeker is a good, free tool, but had a higher rate of false positives in my tests compared to e.g. jv16pt.

As always when using registry cleaners, use a reg. backup software (e.g. the free, excellent Erunt + BartsPE bootdisk)

Maybe you're right, coz my RegSeeker and RegSupreme Pro always find those entries on Corel Graphics and some Office 2003 an invalid entries. And there are some missing parts on it I guess, that i have to reinstall the office 2003 program.
But my EasyCleaner registry cleaner didn't find any invalid entries on my pc, while the other registry cleaners find many things.

As of now I am already careful when using registry cleaners, everytime I uninstall a program/s on my pc I have to see to it that I'll only find and fix those entries related to what I have uninstalled or removed after reboot. Only the left-overs of those uninstalled programs. I don't fix those unrelated entries, and leave the other invalid entries that I'm not sure about. :doubt:

And for now also, everytime I install program/s I always use Total Uninstall to make sure every entries it made will be totally removed when I uninstall them. But the only problem w Total Uninstall was that everytime I install a program it takes longer to install... and I have to be patient. :(
