As most of you know I have been away from the computer due to illness. While visiting here again I notice the mention of M$ Longhorn.......would someone kindly bring me up to date on this upcoming M$ security risk.

Don't worry! This OS will be cracked/hacked as well until it's secure! There's no OS which you can't make secure. ;)

Hi Snowy. The main issue with Longhorn is that it will no longer be Window$ and Window$ applications will not run on it.
As an extra added incentive, you will have to put a quarter into the computer to play an MP3 and file sharing will have to be reinvented.
Before it ever hits the street it will be hacked, cracked, and spayed. People paying money for it will find they can no longer use their mind as Billyboy will probably figure out some way to have it autorun everytime you hit the start button.

What a load of crap - moving into the hardware arena? Must have.. more powerrrr!

Sure, soem of us don't want to have to hack and crack the thing until it's not "assimilated" to MS HQ! FFS

We are one. Resistance is futile.

This means we could leave the best spyware outta the first version and say "spyware free" without regret and let the thing download the spyware from us after you hook up at home...

    This I'd like to see...

Now this last one TAKES the cake; when you get to the end I realized I didn't really need to read anything but the LAST paragraph to understand MS completely.......

Trust me, I know what I'm doing.

And so does M$. :D (Given the chance)

Well the awear comments by everyone certainly made it clear that Longhorn is not being just going to jump into the arena without at least a few people knowing what to expect....
But our friend PIETER truely said it all: "MS does know what its doing" an I could not more fully agree.
Never under estimate the power and ability of M$. To do so would certainly be a grave mistake. You can bet your best pair of most comfortable dirty sneakers that M$ has a plan to force users to purchase Longhorn....read between the lines of that article.
Don't know about you folks....the abilty by the use of Longhorn to collect information and dominate that software industry.....implies serious invasion of privacy like something out of the twilight zone........don't take alot of effort to turn a computer speaker on remotely and monitor conversation in a room....sure just allow M$ to update automatically...outlandish comment....ok,

    Hi snowy,

I´ve seen people happily bragging they were running something, that was supposed to be a Longhorn beta-release. I´m pretty sure it is only a tuned up XP version with all the newest gadgets.
It made me wonder how these things leak so easily....
Nuf said. Back to studying Linux.

    Be prepared,

    Pieter

defintely agree with you....very doubtful that longhorn has leaked out just yeah....would be interesting though. Say, did you notice the article comment that XP is just a tweaked copy of win 2k ?
Linux......already picked up some books LOL....got Mandrake and Knoppix months ago.....got the software to install six drives in just a few minutes......got Ghost to....an just arrogent enough to say "NO" to M$
There is an old saying: "if a man bends over to kiss another man's butt....he finds it very difficult to stand back up like a man"
Now I am just Joe Average trying to survive in a M$ dominate world.....but I dont bend at the waist..

I´ve seen all kinds of comparisons on that, snowy.

"The fruits of the marriage between ME and Win2k" is the one that best describes Win XP Pro, I guess.
Never understood why they decided to market XP Home.

I´m beginning to get a tiny grip on Mandrake, which is a good distribution to start with. For us newbies... ;)
Kind of nice to experience that experimenting, discovering the world, newbie feeling again.
With all the mistakes that come with the territory. :D

please excuse the delay in my replies.....I;ve been jumping back and forth on ssl......business. Say, sure feels great sharing with you again.....yesterday I did get alittle exhusted posting....got to monitor myself these days.
Do you remember when ME was considered the "novice" os.....maybe still is....w2k still appears to me as the os to have......not impressed by XP.....experience users can work with XP but newbes seem to get stranded in limbo
Pieter I've been "making the newbes mistakes" while trying mandrake....an enjoying it. I'm not completely ready to use it on the internet...as a full time os..but eventually will. There is a question in my mind about the firewall issue......been told it has a firewall...been told it does not.....
when feeling better I will just go with using a seperate stand alone tower then network off it....the firewall for the tower "setting on floppy which has to be inserted" to the pc with os and firewall installed......all freeware by the way....picked up two old working towers at a flea mart sale for $5 each.........the tower os does not come into play...wont be used......sorry, not up to energy to go into details.....
Linux....found it slower...but tolarable.....compare to using trash like longhorn...flying a kite is tolarable....

we posted at the same time..replieing. Jack, you are defintely an expert.....an have my respect certainly.....this thing with longhorn by M$ imo is M$ going much to far.....an no matter what Longhorn turns out to be....never will I use it.........normally never do I make a decision without being fully inform..longhorn will be the exception.

    Hi JacK,

Well aware of the differences. :)
I was referring more to the options they combined from both OS´es (f.e. System Restore).

They shouldn´t be, but I still wonder.

I´m sure you have, but are you sure it is anything like the Longhorn that will hit the market in the end (remember, approximately two years to go)

    Snowy,

I did visit some portscan-sites using Mandrake. The difference due to not having countless services listening is amazing. ;)
All the main ports closed and that was with no firewall installed.

    Regards,

    Pieter

My last comment may yet be un-called for on the subject of Longhorn.........will remain openminded on this subject.
to clarify.....its not the longhorn os that bothers me..its the user tracking/privacy issues
can't seem to seperate the two

Not at all but I shall know as I get all beta v ;)

Take my word I am not sold to M$ or anybody : if there are security or confidentiality issues, I shall find and denounce them publicly everywhere  : I am a big mouth :D

    * sorry guys..had to lay down briefly...*

    Jack.

my observation in not an under-estimation...an credit is given were credit is due....your knowledge of computers is to be respected........the same applies to Pieter.....plus, as a person have always noted your honesty.....same with Pieter........these qualities are to be respected........over the years I gained a tremendous respect for Spy 1 due to those same qualities......there are others......but getting ot..
M$ is the bully on the block..but does it end there ? Bear in mind that M$ may have teamed with the three letter agencies to comple information....the word "may" some would say is out of place in that sentence....
Over the years the security community/privacy groups while always just one step behind M$ have still maintained/went toe to toe to protect privacy/repair poor M$ security.........what better way for M$ to gain the advantage again then by changing their os an causing the struggle to start over brand new with M$ in the lead. What better way for M$ to bankrupt the smaller software vendor or control their products.....according to the article.......if the M$ comments are factual then the ballgame starts all over and M$ makes the rules. We are seeing now attacks by M$ on open source.......court ruling force M$ to make way for Sun Java....but Sun Java wont work properly on some os/systems......courts ruled that M$ could not build an os that would restrict the use of Java.......longhorn does not come as a surprise at all.....was more than expected.....not because M$ suddenly decided to improve their os..oh no, instead because M$ is forced to comply with court orders......
But M$ wants to maintain the bullyboy status....at least for several years...by that time it made the money...just like in the past.......everybody will be forced to conform to longhorn...both users and software vendors.....an billyboybullyboy laughs all the way to the bank.
Defintely I will remain open-minded....awaiting comments from persons like yourself.......an, in the mean time...will prepare to move to linux just in case
This is not my preferred attitude.....the mis-trust of M$ was in-grained by M$ itself. An while I am not the brightest shinning star......once kicked in the @ss by m$ is enough .
Its kinda like this.....today I have a choice. The time was when M$ was basically the only "common user" os..M$ had built the better mousetrap....just right for for joe average and family..........but today....when the software/computer industry world wide is struggling to maintain market share......M$ is facing opposition...an I have a choice.........open-minded yes....wait for opinions of the experts yes..........an learning to exersize that choice if the need comes........

    Regards

    The Snowman

    Hi Snowy,

Of course Bill's gang needs a close survey ;)

More and more people are reacting and looking for alternative OS andthat's good for everybody. M$ begins slowly ands reluctantly to unveil (part of) its code.
(BTW M$ VM is an old SUN JVM they go on patching till 01022003)

That's something else to watch : http://www.darpa.mil/iao/tiasystems.htm for instance and as you read E. Kaspersky's position about privacy (sorry I only have French ref), IMHO there is in it more to fear than from Mickey$oft as for now, at least.

    Best regards,
