    Hi All,

I have recently been trailing PE and want to THANK You all
at Diamond for creating such a wonderfull tool. I am still in the learning stage of PE but am succefully useing it to monitor my ports. I can see whats connected at any time and determine where it is connected to and if I want or athorized that connection. PE in my opinion is easy to operate and set up.

In the recent months I have become very in tune with my computer and security issues. It used to be that I was just connected and wanted to surf... throwing caution to the wind when it came to security :(

With the help of others here at www.wilderssecurity.com I have learnd how to operate and control my firewall to make it work to it's full potential and now PE is adding to the arsenal. I love the way I can open PE up and monitor my ports to see whats going on at any time.

I must admit when I first installed PE and opened it up for the first time I about jumped out of my skin.. seeing that 2 of my applications where highlighted in red!!!!
Apon reading thriugh some very good help files I determined that the red high light was indicitive of a possible trojan. With the help of the files and further
investigation I learned some thing new.

Applications highlighted in red are also indicitive of the application running in the task bar and as the wonderful people at diamond made it very clear, they are not aware of any possibl way to map a task bar at this point :)
Give them time!!!! They will find a way :)

I have Kerio running in task bar as well as Mozilla 1.4.
As soon as I removed Mozilla from task bar the application went to its proper state color of black and this reasurd me that there was no problems with the application..

Thanks again Diamond for a great tool I am looking forward to learning more about it. Now all I have to do is get TDS3, WG and PE on my wish list for this christmas and hope the wife actually reads the list this year :)

One question I have and maybe I am not understanding this right.. bear with me

When I logg onto www.wilderssecurity.com useing Mozilla 1.4 shouldnt I see a ESTABLISHED connection
under that tab? I see under the ALL tab where Mozilla is listening and connected to port XXX and when I close out Mozilla it then goes to a Time_Wait which means connection has been closed and I belive it runs for 240 seconds. This 240 seconds is to make sure that all packets are deliverd properly? Am I mis understanding?

Final comments: KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!! AND THANKS FOR PE!! I would recommend it to even the newest user such as my self it is a invaluable tool

Thanks to all the people at www.wilderssecurity.com for the help!!!!!

    Very Best Regards,
    FireDancer

    Hi Firedancer,
thanks for you warm posting: you're learning fast!
Yes, i have those three central on my system as well although WG is hardly noticable deep in the catacombs of the system.
Think you're right with those 240 seconds idea.
On my system sockets and dead threads are released sooner with PE then without it running so i keep it up all time.
Beside seeing what's running i love the Utilities. Really using them a lot.

For your own sake, you might have seen that nice button here on top and bottom right of the thread "send topic" in which you can try if it reaches your wife's email.
Waiting till christmas is a bit long and the evaluation for PE is only a few days so how can you be without it all that long? Going for an early wintersleep? Long Holiday? Switching off the computer and doing some gardening and washing the dishes? Or sitting with fingers and toes crossed hoping nothing bad will happen unseen?

For your nice posting to add to your happiness and to have something to chew on till christmas i pressed that applaud button for you delivering a freshly baked sweet karma cookie for you -- hope you like it!

See it as a family investment, a fine secure system, educate the kids how to use the tools and learn safe computing and all will have lots of pleasure all together.
As we all have to know the value of money more these days and nobody likes throwing money away, we recommend free where possible and where it is to pay for software always the best choices are recommended as you can read in the forums.
Make sure you grab all the free tools from the DCS site as these are really nice too.

    Hi Firedancer,

the "established" socket state probably does appear but depending on how fast your internet connection is, it may go straight into time-wait before PE has a chance to update. This is because your machine connected to the web server and received all the data very quickly (be proud you have a fast connection :) ). I am sure if you started a long download it would say ESTABLISHED while it is downloading it. Remember in the PE Trial/Demo version the refresh speed is limited to 3 seconds so that also may be why you don't see ESTABLISHED that often. In the full/registered version you can set the refresh to 1 second which shows a somewhat more accurate depiction at any one time.

Thanks for your kind words too and welcome to the forums :)

I agree that PE is a neat tool and a good investment, especially to quickly see which application is holding which port open. Now that I have XP Home Edition as operating system on my main computer {host}, this is a helpful addition to my arsenal of tools. Kudos to you FireDancer and blessings upon you and your family! Warmly, Ran

    Randy,
As you mentioned you're on XP you can also use our freeware OpenPorts utility (it only supports NT4/2K/XP, but then, Port Explorer is the only port-to-process mapper available for Win9x anyway :)). You don't really need it when youve got Port Explorer, but it has the advantage of being a console tool so you can pipe the results to a file, use it in batch scripts, etc etc :)

The best? hmm can't agree 100% as i love all products each in their own field, but it is easy to use and very user friendly and we can change the look to our taste and fitting by our furniture, true, it is great, but i would not want to be a day without TDS and WormGuard too and all the tools which run also on win9x systems.
I use them all in cooperation to each other.
