Kubuntu, Xubuntu 12.04 Become Long Term Support Releases

Ouch, only 3 years for Xubuntu. Murphy's Law at play because I told my wife that I will install it for her in April and that it has 5 years support.

 

i guess they extend it to 5 or else they have to make xubuntu LTS every 3 years man

 

Gak. I'd much rather install 11.04, 10.10, 10.04 Xubuntu in April. 12.04 coming out in April will be BUGGY just like all the other new releases. I don't like installing new releases until at least the huge bugs are worked out (like laptop overheating).

 

I upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10 on the day 11.10 was officially released. I don't regret it. Isn't most software buggy?

As for laptop overheating, again, I guess I'm lucky.

 

Well firstly, it's not software, it's an OS. And yes, I kind of expect a new Linux product to be buggy. How can they possibly test it on every configuration before release? I like to give them a few months to work out the bugs before I jump on board.

If you successfully upgraded then you were luckier than I. I attempted an upgrade to 11.10 and totally broke it. I had to do a clean install of 11.10.

 

I for one always do clean installs for the 'buntus. It doesn't take very long to get all the stuff you had before.
Of course you need to backup your ~/ beforehand eg. on dvd or usb. Then you will also have the config files to copy to your new install.
12.04 will be good because it is an LTS - those are very stable indeed.

I hope so. My bad experience with 11.10 has perhaps biased me incorrectly.

 

If it sounded like I was promoting my experience as the only one, then I completely misspoke. I'm simply adding my experience to the mix. IMO talking about experiences provides useful information.
