I must admit I like KAV 6 beta very much especially the proactive defense. I can get NOD32 for $20 with a student discount. I guess I really just want to iknow which AV is better, at least in opinion. I have used both and like both. I heard NOD was going to becaome a suite which I don't really like. But the price tag for KAV might be steep. I will need some sort of registry defense. This is my security configuration:

    Adaware
    Spybot
    Spyware Blaster
    LnS
    HJT!
    ProcessGuard
    Samurai
    Necrofile Pro
    KAV/NOD (?) or maybe I should use VBA32
    Harden-it
    Secure-it

    Any ideas?

Since price is an issue for you, and you already have ProcessGuard on your system, i would say go for Nod32.

You could also take a look at some of the tests at www.av-comparatives.org this is an independant testing site.

    Cheers :D

So there have been no changes in scanning techniques and/or results in the new version? KAV 6 has not been tested.

Price isn't really an issue. Security is important to me. What does PG have to do with this? From what I can tell there is no overlapping.

I am mainly interested in the proactive defense in KAV 6. If I go with NOD what should I use to replace this?

Yes, there is, but since Kav 2006 is not going to be released until jan/2006 there is of course no tests yet. It's pretty hard to improve on a 99,9% detectionrate btw. ;) :)

I must say I am very very impressed by this KIS 2006.
It's a complete overhaul and complete coverage but still very slick.
It's acting stable .. I hope the cpu and ram usage will be useable for everyday use with all this protection....

I would say you to choose KAV 2006 over NOD32 2.5... but I don´t know what AV I will choose when NOD32 v3 come out...

Well Firecat...is that surprise going to be worth buying NOD again? I'm trying to make a decision between NOD and KAV. I already know the future of KAV (v6) now I need to know if you can tell me anything about NODv3 (anything at all) so that I can make the most informed decision. Pretty please....

    Ok .
NOD , at this point , WILL be worth every penny at version 3 . But , it is worth every penny now ! If you can get it for $ 20 . 00 I suggest doing it as you are concerned about the KAV price . The bottom line is this : NOD and KAV are both top tier programs . It does not get any better . Either choice is an excellent bet . take your pick . Do not worry about Version 3 . The current version is excellent .
    Good luck

I understand you can't talk about it (that much). I have bought multiple licences from Firecat and know NOD is great. I am however more concerned with the "proactive defense" KAV provides. I need that protection. Almost ready to pull the trigger. I just need to know:

    1. Will NOD v3 have "proactive defense?"
    2. Will a v2 licence to honored.

    Thanks very much

NOD does have a proactive defense . Depends on how you are defining this . As for licensing . When 3 comes out , if your license period is still active , MORE THAN LIKELY you will upgrade for free . No need to worry about NOD providing the protection you need . It DOES ! Please understand that NOD is as good as KAV and vice versa . I cannot see any difference in you being protected by using one or the other . KAV detects more trojans but , NOD has heuristics that are catching alot too . Choose one and go . regardless of which you use , you will always question whether the other is better . Hard to get you to trust me on this but , they are both excellent products and giveyou the protection you need .
    Good luck

Go with whichever company offers the best deal for multiple licences.

You can use Ewido Guard with NOD32 for better protection against trojans...

No idea, and no one knows.

All upgrades are FREE while you have a current license.

    Cheers :D

I think for my money though I'd rather go with KAV. It seems like NOD v3 will be a very good product. However the details of it are still for the mosr part unknown, whereas the details of KAV 6 are not. It's just a matter of too little too late; if you really want to rival KAV you should be beta testing it now as they are. I know what to expect from KAV and I do not from NOD. For all I know it might not meet all my needs; virus and registry protection. I know KAV provides this. And I found a 5.0 (useable fith 6.x) for $30.

    Heh, thats weird...

    1. Will NOD v3 have "proactive defense?"

Everyone are asking about this but noone mentioned Proactive detection/defense means the same as Heuristics detection/defense.
And NOD32 Advanced Heuristics certanly falls into this category...

I have been saying this since I joined the forums. Someone even asked me if I had some problem with nod on some other thread.

Well, I don´t, it has protected me quite well, although it does not detect many easily available keyloggers and, in my particular situation, that is quite a problem.

As I explained in another thread, my anti-virus buying/renewal decisions are made in november. Unitl now, NOD 3 is not but vaporware.

I haven´t seem any list of confirmed features, there´s no open beta, in fact in some other thread in the forums someone mentioned there is barely an early alpha available to testers.

I like the way KAV decided to act making early betas available. It allowed me to evaluate what will be available in their next version, if the product gives my systems an overall protection, what kind and level of protection it will offfer.

All I have seem about NOD 3 is that it will be a good surprise...

Well I´d rather not have a surprise, I prefer to act based upon facts.

I´m not criticizing NOD as a product, it offers very good protection to my computers but hiding the next version confirmed features is quite a wierd way to do business.

The absolute lack of solid information is quite disturbing, to me, at least.
