The only thing missing from KAR is Anti-exploit protection, the rest is the same as in KAV. They've focused on Ransomware in their marketing only.

 

You should not, since you already said that you "don't care about WD and third party AV's at all"... Or are you going to break your promise?

 

Well I was of course only joking, especially because Kaspersky is now under fire by the US government. And I would care about third party AV's if they weren't that bloated and bad for privacy.

I would love to know what data is being collected. Especially when it comes to free AV's, there is no free lunch.

 

Yes, I would like know this also. They have privacy policy for KSN which I disabled. IDK what data they collect if I use it as file scanner only.

 

The only data being sent on KSN isn't personally identifiable data but info that can determine what potential threats the cloud anti-virus should counter.

If KSN is disabled, then the Cloud AV isn't protecting you and the only active protection is the KAV local definition databases.

 

Yes I know that. But even if I use only local definition files, does it send data to their servers during updates and similar? It would be nice to know what data is sent in this case.

 

KSN data is all info about your computer's hardware, the OS, installed applications and the current state of the computer so it can identify, analyze and terminate threats to it. No personally identifiable information is sent to KSN servers. As for the use of the data:

Seems to be a reasonable use of the data collected. As Kaspersky points out, participation in KSN is optional but if enabled, it can enhance the protection KAV can provide.

 

Yes they have detailed explanation and statement when opting for KSN. Unfortunately no info about what is collected if you don't use KSN.

 

Kaspersky doesn't collect personal user data per its policy. If you don't feel that they're respecting your personal privacy, then uninstall the product. FWIW, I have KSN enabled.

 

Either you trust Kaspersky or you don´t, but in either case is a faith-based decision. To expect that they´re going to act according to what is written in their policy statements is naive, I think.

 

KAV-free hooked into Thunderbird, so that Thunderbird gave me a certificate warning.
It offered to download the certificate, but that did not work.
So I added a exception for the Kaspersky certificate, within Thunderbird.
After that I was able to download emails again, but was not able to show external content, neither with a temporary exception, nor with a permanent exception.

While browsing with Chrome, I got several false certificate warnings, example on Amazon...

Maybe I have to wait a while, to get the certificates spread, or get a localized version of KAV-free...

Finally I uninstalled KAV-free, as I feel no need for IM and Email -protection.
Also KAV-free nagged me every day, to register...

Now I'm back on WD (with pup.reg) and KAR for business, on that machine,
which gives a better, layered security in my opinion, taking into account, that it's got the rollback feature, and the cloud reputation feature, that does cover way more than ransomware. (If I interpret the given numbers of known bad samples right)

 

Yes Cloud reputation in KAR shows large number of samples from whole KSN. So it shows statistics from all user participating in their network and not just KAR users. To me, the question remains if KAR will block all of them or just those that are categorized as ransomware.

 

KSN in KAV Free does block all malware except ransomware and that only due to the absence of a BB.

KAR will block all types of malware that are detected via either generic cloud rules or local behavior detection rules. KAF will block ransomware that is detected via cloud or local signatures, but not with local behavior detection rules as it doesn't have System Watcher.

I have read in malwaretips that the free version doesn't have any local behaviour protection, I guess the paid version will have it.

Yup. If you upgrade to the paid version, you get that and more. Whether its worth the $50 premium is up to the user to decide.
