India's digital Universal ID program is deeply flawed, say critics
Using electricity-reliant technology in the hinterland is just one big problem amongst many say observers.
But the government doesn't seem to care.

The "arrogant, head-in-the sand attitude and inability to keep private data secure" seems to me to be a feature of ID and surveillance schemes inflicted by government departments. The UK's Home Office is disastrous in that respect, but then it's Someone Else's Problem.

I loved the statement by Aadhar officials on the previous breach: “Mere display of demographic information cannot be misused without biometrics,” They just love the "it's only metadata" mantra, probably associated with the "if you've got nothing to hide" drivel.

It's my impression that India's a lot like China in some ways. There's a mix of accepting corruption as normal business practice, and being too polite (or frightened) to complain when stuff falls apart.

I wonder why the mass media tends to focus on China as the human-rights devil. India isn't that far behind, it seems. There's less censorship, for sure. But there's the same argument that surveillance is necessary to maintain social harmony, right?
