I bought TI 9 and installed it on a Win98SE system.

I then created a bootable rescue CD.

I use HDD caddies in my PC, so I put in the one with Fedora 4 on it (no Windows at all).

Using the rescue CD I backed up the entire drive to CD-R's.

When I tried to restore the HDD from the CD's, it wiped grub and rebooted.

After hours of trying many things, including clearing all the partitions and creating an entire drive of free space - I could not restore anything.

No matter what I tell the rescue disk to do, the PC simply reboots when I hit "proceed".

The image on the last backup CD shows the correct partitions and sizes were backed up, and shows them available to be restored - but nothing seems to work after that. In fact, most of the time it shows the HDD (Disk 1) as unavailable for writing to.

Have I misunderstood how this program is supposed to work? I used it as I would Norton Ghost, but obviously it is not that simple.

I have only been using Linux for a couple of months and before I migrate from Windows, I need a simple and reliable way to "ghost" Linux.

Help please, I am completely stuck for ideas. It is 1am in Australia, so I won't see any replies until the morning.

Quite likely a problem with version 9. Have you read about all the problems associated with version 9 - right here in this forum?

    Hi Chutsman,

Yes I did before I decided to take the risk and buy it. The trial seemed to work - at least the parts that weren't crippled.

The installation and backup seemed to work Ok, so I thought I'd have no problems.

I've also read how hard it is to get a refund, which is not encouraging.

Can someone please tell me what pre-requisites I need for a HDD to be "restored"?

For example, do I need to clear or rebuild (somehow) the grub bootloader in the MBR?

Do I need to setup any partitions first, or should I format the whole drive as one hda1, ext3 empty drive?

Or do I just admit I'm an old fool and try to get my money back?

New version9 buyers, because of all the problems, are supposed to be able to download ti8 in addition, so try it first. Since you use caddies just image to another hdrive and size each tib file to 700mb in case you want to burn later. Image the complete hdrive. Just use the boot cd and aim ti to this hdrive to restore from. This will also eliminate any burning problems, though I doubt that is the case. Also try it on your 98 drive and see if it works.
    I use caddies too.
