Right click on the page you want to bookmark, select bookmark this page, a window will pop up, select create in bookmarks toolbar.

Have you gone to view at the top of the browser window and selected bookmarks toolbar?

I wouldn't reinstall the whole operating system. :D You could reinstall Firefox over the top of your current installation and that might help.
Show me a small screenshot of what you are seeing as I did for you when you click view.

since it was already checked, clicking it again would uncheck it and remove teh bookmark toolbar from view. just go back and check it again.

once u have the toolbar in view, try this: right click and drag teh url (from address bar) to the bookmarks toolbar.

i think i installed this over the top of an old Firefox install, so a clean install might help. though i could try installing OTT again first - it's quicker.

there are afew other problems with this install, that's reminded me i need to ask a question about Spybot too

    here's the view screenshot...

Are you trying to add a bookmarks icon such as the one illustrated on top bar?
Or are you trying to add a 3rd line containing bookmarks?
Does this illustrate what you are wanting to achieve?

thanks, i hadn't thought of that.
i wanted to have the bookmarks where i showed in post#1. is that possible, or is that not the correct place? do toolbar bookmarks need another toolbar?

In order to have bookmarks displayed on the toolbar you have to add bookmarks to the 'bookmarks toolbar folder'.
If you select 'bookmarks' it is one of the items in the menu.
This comes straight from the knowledge base at mozillazine I haven't tried this out myself yet, but maybe this will do the trick.

that's the first thing i tried, while i drag it there's a circle symbol with a line through it which doesn't change when i go to the toolbar! it does change to a dotted rectangle when i hover any tabs, but not on the toolbar

i just had alook at the Bookmarks Toolbar Folder from the bookmarks menu and there's about 20 links there already.

i might try changing the theme

What WSF suggested will work also, just dragging the link to that third bar will create a bookmark in the 'bookmark toolbar folder'.
If you have links in there then you are using it already.

i have links in the toolbar folder, but i'm not using it, it's not there. i'm going to try a different theme now though, that might get it working.

In one of your earlier posts i saw a whole battery of links on that toolbar, if you click on one of them aren't you then directed to that particular site?

Gerard, that's what i meant, that Bab etc that you're showing.
I've placed some links in there and it works just as advertised.

    helen321,
Sometimes a picture is better than words. Hopefully, this picture will provide some "food for thought" as to how to achieve your goal.

Part of the final process will be for you to customize the viewing.
Click View; Click Toolbar; Click customize.
Now the mouse pointer becomes a hand. You can drag contents from/to the open window; or move the contents on the bars; or add/remove rows; and you can grab the bookmarks toolbar icon and position wherever you want--different rows--different positions. Close the customization window and your changes are finalized. It may taks some experimentation.

Before you start, I would suggest you make a backup copy of "bookmarks.html" just in case you should need it. You can find the file using the search function.

Hopefully this will be of assistance. If you are already doing this, then my apologies for mis-interpreting your request.:)

gerard, yes that's what Helen and i were trying to do.

i just launched Firefox so i could show all of you i knew how to do it and prove there must be something wrong with Helen's Firefox, but i can't do it on my computer either lol, i think it's the most complicated thing i've ever come across.

Grover, i'll see if i can do it on my computer, but i don't hold much hope.
