How can a non-running program function?

    According to the knowledge base, SpywareBlaster doesn't have to be running to function: "Unlike other anti-spyware products, SpywareBlaster doesn't have to remain running to provide protection. This means that there are no extra processes taking up memory and cpu cycles."

    How can a program that isn't running do anything? I am confused about this. Can somebody please explain how SpywareBlaster functions when it isn't running?
