Hotspot Shield safety and blocked add-ons

I am currently using a nearby public wifi until the u-verse people come over to activate my account. In the meantime, I've been using Hotspot Shield mainly to get past the web filter that blocks me from connecting to watch youtube videos. I have yet to do anything like check my email or logon to my bank account. I'm also wanting to order something on eBay and reactivate my netflix account which requires inputting a new credit card, and frankly the U-verse people are gonna take over a week to come over.

As long as I am connected to an https address, should I be concerned about entering my passwords or other sensitive information? What about with or without Hotspot Shield? The Shield itself worries me more, since when I restarted firefox, there were three add-ons that I disabled that came from hotspot shield (funmoodus, hotspot shield, hotspot shield helper) and my homepage was changed. I'm not sure if disabling these firefox add-ons compromises the Shield's ability to function properly or not. I've seen this vpn recommended several times by cnet and lifehacker and on this forum, but I am wary of anything that installs so many add-ons. Hotspot shield keylogging me is even more concerning.

With the combination of public wifi with hotspot shield, what should I be concerned about and allowed to do? Because these worries about security make it impossible to do anything besides casual surfing and I don't know if I should even check my email or not.
