Help ID Open File(s)

Hi Guys,

The latest 'Shadow Defender' version 1.1.275 includes the following 'warning' message:

"Some files on this volume(s) are in use, it is recommended to close any used files on the volume to be protected."

OS = XPhome SP3, C:\ & D:\

The warning message only happens when "D:\" is included for Shadow Mode. How can I identify the process or file, that Shadow Defender thinks is in use?

An obvious choice would have been 'Process Explorer', however the non GUI version "Handle" is the tool of choice for ID'ing open files or open handles.

If you like it better this way, Nir Sofer's OpenedFilesView will do this through GUI. Check out his tools, he's pretty much rivaling Mark.

Hi Nick,

That would have been nice to have on or about the date of the OP. Handle runs from the 'command prompt' & is difficult to see. I posted this as now I'm done or don't need it. Thought I'd share with the community, my find.

Yes all those little standalone utilities make a great portable toolbox. And he keeps him busy updating them too, so it is a good idea to keep visiting his panel regularly.

No Problem, this was a good learning experience.

Little background:

When I originally installed Shadow Defender, I decided to move "My Desktop" & "My Documents" to d drive, leaving c as system. Turns out chkdsk d: + SD, (the ones i know about) complained of open files, on d. Some programs located on c used MY Documents for data storage, with the data on d. Stuff was complaining about open handles. So i ID'd the open ones with Handle & moved some of My Documents back to c.
