DVD Backup

Are the following messages to be expected when backing up to DVD?

I used build 2302 in trial and did a full image backup using DVDs. I used UDF formatted DVDs created with Veritas DLA. I started the backup and after a while it gave "error" message saying the disk was full "E0004004" "operation is stopped" "press retry to continue with vol 4" and "format" and "cancel".

Pressing "retry" did nothing. Pressing "format" would not let me format a DVD. Pressing "cancel" aborted the entire operation. However, when I ejected the existing DVD and inserted a new formatted DVD the writing continued. I did this for several DVDs but quit when I ran out of DVDs. The program never asked me to reinsert a previous DVD in order to continue.

1) Is this normal procedure?
2) Does the program not recognize DVDs and think everything is a CD?
3) Do the DVDs piggyback onto each other? If so, shouldn't the program ask to reinsert the prior DVD after the current one is full?
4) If I had continued until the end, would the backup have worked?
5) Why didn't the format button work?
6) I asked the program to do an integrity check when I submitted the job. Would it wait until all DVDs were written and then ask for DVDs to be reinserted and checked later?

I'm afraid that it's a known issue with DVD-writing. Please take a look at the previous post of Alexey Popov at https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showpost.php?p=612338&postcount=12

Please be aware that this is a normal situation when a DVD writer is shown as a CD burner in Acronis True Image 9.0. This doesn't affect the device's functionality and you can use DVD.

You should write an image to multiple DVDs at first and only after that you will be able to verify an image integrity.

It should be said also that there is a second way to write an image to DVDs. You can create an image as a single file on the hard disk itself and then you can copy the file using your own DVD-writing software to the DVD. If the image size is too large, you should split it into several parts during the image creation on the Image Archive Splitting window.

Please note that once a full image is created as one consistent file it instantly becomes indivisible and in case it exceeds the limit of 4.7 GB (the maximum capacity of a DVD disc) you will not be able to divide it into parts and burn to DVDs. So when creating an image you should bear in mind where you want to store the image to.

However we would recommend you to set the archive splitting size manually if you are planning to transfer an image archive to DVD discs. The archive size should be set at 2 GB to avoid possible discrepancies when being restored later. This proviso relates to most of the modern DVD-writing software.
