I have a Zywall 2 plus that I have been using for a while, but am considering changing over to a firewall that comes with dd-wrt pre-installed. Any thoughts on whether dd-wrt would be considered a step up or down from the Zywall? Might there be something else I would want to consider like a better alternative to dd-wrt?

Why would you want $25 hardware when you can get say a Zyxel USG 50 or USG 20? I would go with the USG 50 if I were you. I run the USG 100 with services on my home network.

Here's my impression, and please correct me if I'm wrong. I thought that for the most part the hardware for any consumer firewall is pretty much of equal quality (assuming a decent manufacturer), and it's the firewall software that really makes the difference. So from that viewpoint I was wondering if something like a Buffalo router with dd-wrt was a better choice than the Zywall 2 plus.

I should mention that since posting I've looked around some more, and now I'm thinking the Zywall is better choice -- although to be honest I couldn't quantify why it is other than that seems to be the consensus. The two you mention look interesting, so maybe at some point when I'm looking to go small business grade those would be worth a look -- just a little out of my budget right now. What I was really trying to decide was whether I should keep what I have which is a couple of years old (the Zywall 2 plus) or sinking $60-80 into something with dd-wrt preinstalled.
