What hardware / software do you use to backup your data? I just lost years of stuff because my fan died and fried my machine.

When it comes to imaging drives, i use Drive image, see other topic on imaging.
For anything other than complete drive backup, i do like SmartBackup by Jam Software.

sorry to hear of your bad experience. in such a case perhaps cd's and floppies could be suggested.

Back-up? What's a back-up? Is that when you back up to the loading dock and gently ease that new computer into the trunk? :D Pete

Never thought about that Snowman, but damn good idea with a costly unit like mine.. is that harware or software??

Edited to say.. I do have several fans.. maybe make a difference if it was hardware.

Nothing easier to tell than when a fan no longer works.
I check when i exhale. If smoke from cigarettes gets sucked in the front of system, then fan works ! :D

Depends on if it is your case fan/s or your CPU fan... ;)

Most new Motherboards have motherboard monitoring software, that works with the motherboards monitoring hardware showing voltages, fan speeds ect and the BIG alarm when they are faling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you don't have this software now, You either have a wrong brand motherboard or your PC manufaturer never installed it.
I have not seen any of the big brand PC makers install motherboard monitoring software yet.
Find out what brand motherboard your manufacturer used and go see if that mobo has the right stuff.
This is why I build my own :D
Go look at Intel, SuperMicro, ect ...and view the motherboard monitoring software they provide.

    Hoi Mr. Fish, ;)

    Already thought about software-cooling?

Beside regulary images by Drive Image 2002, I use CPUidle too.

Two times my fan died, and only the use of a software-cooling program have saved my work.

There are several sw-cooling program's, I prefer CPUidle because it was exact doing what I wanted.

    CPUidle is shareware.

    Ciao,

    Smokey
