Canadian Police Raid ‘Orcus RAT’ Author

Canadian police last week raided the residence of a Toronto software developer behind “Orcus RAT,” a product that’s been marketed on underground forums and used in countless malware attacks since its creation in 2015. Its author maintains Orcus is a legitimate Remote Administration Tool that is merely being abused, but security experts say it includes multiple features more typically seen in malware known as a Remote Access Trojan.

A 31-year-old Maryland man has been sentenced to more than seven years in federal prison for his leadership role in a business email compromise scheme that netted $4.2 million from 13 victims over a two-year period, according to the U.S. Justice Department and the Secret Service.

Nkeng Amin of Beltsville, Maryland, was sentenced Tuesday to 87 months in federal prison after entering a guilty plea. Amin, who is also known as "Rapone" and "Arnold," also must pay just over $1 million in restitution, according to the Justice Department.
During this week's court hearing, U.S. District Judge Paul W. Grimm also sentenced three of the co-conspirators in the case to federal prison terms ranging from 57 months to 90 days. Two others being held in custody are awaiting sentencing, according to the Secret Service.

A Ninth Circuit panel upheld the 27-year prison sentence of a Russian computer hacker who was extradited to the United States while on vacation with his family in the Maldives to face charges he stole credit card numbers and millions of dollars.

Seleznev, also known by his hacker handles “Ruben Samvelich” or “Track2”, caused more than $169 million in damages when he and a group of hackers stole credit card numbers and sold them on the dark web between 2009 and 2013.
In a separate incident, a grand jury indicted Seleznev in 2014 for a heist that targeted a payroll processor in 2008.
He was sentenced to 27 years in prison in April 2017.

According to court documents and statements made in open court, O’Hara engaged in an eighteen-month course of conduct, which occurred in Delaware, New Jersey, and New York, and which involved the harassment and intimidation of a former classmate of O’Hara’s, as well as the classmate’s parents and classmate’s romantic partner. O’Hara further admitted that he also engaged in cyberstalking conduct against other victims throughout this period, including former high school classmates, office co-workers, and others who rejected his advances.

A former staff member who worked in an office of a United States Senator pled guilty today to federal charges stemming from his theft of Senate information and the illegal posting of restricted personal information of five U.S. Senators on the Wikipedia website, as well as related conduct.

Jackson A. Cosko, 27, of Washington, D.C., pled guilty to five federal offenses: two counts of making public restricted personal information; one count of computer fraud; one count of witness tampering, and one count of obstruction of justice.
“Doxxing” is the act of gathering, by licit and illicit means, and posting on the Internet personal identifying information (“PII”) and other sensitive information about an individual.

In a statement of offense submitted as part of today’s plea, Cosko admitted that he had been angry about his termination in May 2018 from his employment as a computer systems administrator in the office of another U.S. Senator

A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to two years in prison for selling unlicensed bitcoins. His crime was operating a bitcoin exchange without registering with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network of the US Department of Treasury.

Jacob Burrell Campos, a US citizen and Mexico resident, has been held in custody without bail since August 2018. He pleaded guilty in October 2018, admitting that he employed no anti-money laundering measures and didn’t check up on details about his customers and where their money came from.
The US Justice Department has ruled that Burrell gave his clients “anonymity and privacy and exchanged over $1 million in unregulated cash,” potentially allowing criminals to launder cash without scrutiny.

The Czech Republic’s highest court says a former justice minister violated the rights of an alleged Russian hacker by allowing his extradition to the U.S. before a separate asylum case was finalized.
Yevgeniy Nikulin is accused of hacking computers at LinkedIn, Dropbox and other American companies in 2012, compromising the personal information of millions of Americans.

The Constitutional Court said Tuesday that then Justice Minister Robert Pelikan allowed Nikulin’s extradition before his asylum request went through the court system. Nikulin was later denied asylum. He was extradited to the U.S. in March 2018.
Pelikan is no longer justice minister and won’t face any punishment.

Two Romanian hackers were founded guilty Thursday of launching a series of sophisticated malware attacks that infected the computers of thousands of people around the world.

Bogdan Nicolescu and Radu Miclaus were each convicted on 20 charges, including wire fraud, conspiracy to traffic in counterfeit service marks, aggravated identity theft, and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
Federal prosecutors spent more than two weeks presenting evidence to a jury that the pair were part of a group that controlled a “botnet,” or a group of infected computers and controlled to send and receive spam messages. At its height, the botnet was 400,000 computers strong, officials said.

Prosecutors said in 2016, when the case was announced, that victims lost more than $4 million as a result, and that 11 million malicious emails were sent to unsuspecting recipients.

The 33-year-old Indian man was charged with hacking websites and issuing threats.

According to official records, the defendant, who worked as a computer programmer with the media company, resigned and threatened to hack its client websites after Dh4,000 was deducted from his salary.
“He sent WhatsApp messages to another programmer at the company saying that he will hack the websites if the company didn’t repay him the Dh4,000 deducted from his salary. He was informed that the deduction would be made if he resigned before the end of the probation period,” said the company owner.

According to court documents, Brandon Theresa, 21, engaged in an extensive cyberstalking campaign against a victim from at least May 2015 through December 2018. During that time, he accessed the victim’s online accounts without the victim’s permission and periodically impersonated the victim and the victim’s friends to gain information about the victim’s comings and goings. As part of that conduct, Theresa established U.S. Postal Service Informed Delivery accounts, which provide detailed information about the mail received at a particular address, using the personal information of the victim and the victim’s friends and family member in order to further place the victim under surveillance.
