CA firewall won't permit me to enable cookies

I had been frustrated with a problem accessing certain web sites for a couple of years. During that time, I had searched the Internet for answers unsuccessfully, but finally found the solution today on this fabulous site.

On certain web sites, I kept getting messages saying that I had to enable cookies before I could use their site. I followed countless online suggestions for enabling cookies, without success. I even went so far as to install all my anti-virus, anti-spyware, and firewall programs. Today, when I tried to access the map of restaurants at oldcountrybuffet.com, there was a "Removed by HIPS FW" message where the map should have been. A quick search brought me to this web site and the thread at

which was too old to reply to. I decided to start a new thread so that others may learn from my experiences.

Much thanks to TheQuest and FishIsGoodForYou for providing the answer to my problems. They said the HIPS FW message was coming from the CA firewall. It turns out I used to have CA Internet Security Suite on my computer, but I uninstalled it a couple of years ago. Apparently uninstalling the software didn't remove everything. In Device Manager, Show hidden devices, I found several entries beginning with kmx, all of which I unstalled. Then I went to the Registry Editor and searched for hips. There were dozens of entries referring to c:\Program Files\CA\SharedComponents\HIPSEngine. I deleted all folders with names beginning with umx or kmx. I also deleted all values set to umx... or kmx... It was alarming how many residual entries there were after I had uninstalled the software. I might add that these entries were not picked up by my ccleaner scans.

After uninstalling the hidden devices and deleting registry entries, I rebooted and was so relieved to find that web sites I hadn't been able to use in a long, long time worked perfectly. Not only was the HIPS FW message gone, I no longer got a message that I have to enable cookies to view the web page.
