Bit Defender conflicts with Spy Sweeper?

I chatted with online support at Bit Defender and was told Spy Sweeper conflicts with Bit Defender 9 Standard, which is only an anti-virus program. Does anyone know of a problem using Bit Defender 9 Standard with either Spy Sweeper or Counter Spy?

 

I use Bitdefender 9 together with Spy Sweeper, and no problems at all

 

Did Support happen to mention in what way the 2 programs conflict with each other

 

I neither understand what the problem can be, i have used Bitdefender v9 Standard and Pro with Spy Sweeper and CounterSpy, no problems at all

 

Yeah....I'm curious also since I do know that bitdefender does conflict with Spywareblaster and was wondering how it might conflict with Spysweeper.

 

Running Bdef. 9 Pro and SS realtime and haven't noticed any probs (yet).

The technical person I spoke with over the phone said I would get errors. When I asked her if there were customers complaining of a problem using the Standard version with Spy Sweeper, she said yes!

I couldn't understand how an anti-virus program that does not use spyware detection could conflict with Spy Sweeper so I posted here. In fact, I am presently using Norton Internet Security and have also used Counterspy, Spy Sweeper at the same time!

I want to use the Trial for Bit Defender Standard but their tech support person sscared me off. The other issue is Norton Internet Security because she said uninstalling would leave traces of Live Registration and Live Update that would cause problems. So, I guess I'll either have to wait until my NIS license expires in February or do a complete reinstall of XP. Any thoughts here?

And because you want to use the trial version Bitdefender Standard it cost you nothing to see how well Bitdefender works on your system.
When it is doing the job in a proper way, you can decide to buy Bitdefender, if not, it cost you nothing

About NIS: there are good tools to remove any traces, here on Wilders there is already a thread about the NIS-removing tools, but i have not the time to look where the thread is.

 

Hopefully not at the same time with real-time protection on for all three?

The removall tool for NIS 2004-2006 is symNRT, after you have uninstalled NIS (& rebooted), then use "search" to find & delete any folder left behind, then run symNRT.

 

What would I search on? Symantec?

The link also suggests Section 3--would that replace doing the "search"?

 

Use both Symantec and Norton, then do those steps in the link.

I use BD 9.0, and have used Spysweeper, Spyware Blaster, and most of the common AS and AT programs. I have never found a conflict. Sometimes when Counterspy makes a major change such as a new version BD gives some FP. That is soon corrected.

After reading all the praise for NOD32, I think I'll be giving that one a shot. I just hope NOD isn't too complicated for me--I've been using NIS for a few years and that is super easy. Actually, I haven't had a problem using NIS, just that this forum has me going bananas to try NOD, LooknStop, and perhaps OA.

I saw your instructions for uninstalling Norton on the Kapersky forum and they differ somewhat from what you stated above. First, there are two different downloads in Step 3 of the SymNRT link you posted above:

One is for IE and the other for Firefox. I was using IE and now using Firefox. Should I go with the download for Firefox or IE?

Included in your instructions on the Kapersky forum is to download a fresh copy of Microsoft Windows Script. Does step 3 eliminate that? I'm asking because you didn't suggest that in your instructions above.

 

Here is step 3 (Does this eliminate the need for RegSupreme?):

Section 3: Download and run two files
These files remove some older Norton files if they exist, and they repair a Microsoft file.

1. Follow the instructions for your Web browser:

I would, there have in the past been many reports about Norton messing with MS sript during the uninstall and it takes around 10 sec.

No, RegSupreme is not absolutely necessary, but recommended, again i would use it.

As far as I'm concerned NIS and NAV can be equally if not more destructive than the majority of the malware/virii they're intended to remove or detect.

I've recently done a clean install of XP. On a whim, and against my better judgement from past experiences, I installed NIS 2005. I believed I'd be able to tame it and forbid if from assuming total control of my system files and internet connection while still doing what security/antivirus programs are expected to do.

After I realized it had installed network drivers and windows services for features I had completely (painstakingly) disabled, I decided I'd just not allow them to run. NIS was not happy, it killed my internet connection when I killed it's memory thirsty services. I also found it had done some kind of tampering with the Microsoft Installer service. It's hard enough to keep msi running smoothly as it is.

But what annoyed me the most was that it didn't do as I asked. When I configure a program to my preferences and tell it what I don't want it to do, and it repeatedly does what it wants anyway... well, I usually run a spyware scanner and a virus scanner.

I really don't want to do another XP install this soon but Windows Installer seems to be quite borked.

Well, sorry for my rant but I really needed to vent. NortonWare is the only software I've ever had this much trouble removing. Hell, the uninstaller did little more than delete part of the application. And I'm a little scared of symantec's cleanup program as it doesn't give a course to take if you're NOT planning on reinstalling afterwards and it renames msiexec.exe msihnd.dll and msi.dll without replacing them.

I tried to uninstall NIS 2005 in the safe mode as suggested by Don Pelotas, but it wouldn't let me uninstall and said to start in Normal mode.

I tried logging in as Administrator and under my name, which has the Computer administrator account.

Don, any suggestions?

I rebooted into safe mode from re-starting. I'll try the instructions found in Don's post below--after I've backed up my files

Windows XP

If Windows XP is the only operating system installed on your computer, booting into Safe Mode with these instructions.
If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power
Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
When you are finished with all troubleshooting, close all programs and restart the computer as you normally would.

I tried uninstalling NIS 2005 in the safe mode but Windows just says I must start in Windows. It will not work in the safe mode.

By the way, when using RegSupreme to clean the registry, do I type in Symantec and after that Norton? Anything else?

Considering I cannot uninstall Norton in the safe mode, would I be better off doing a clean install of XP? I'm beginning to think that would be the best solution

 

Well, I uninstalled NIS 2005 using Add/Remove, RegSupreme Pro, SymNRT, and searching for files and folders, and I now have NOD32, LNS, and Online Armor running. So far, everything is working with no error messages for NIS.

I installed Microsoft Windows Script per Don's suggestion.

My Processes running decreased by 6 and my Memory increased. I need further help with the setup of NOD, LNS, and OA, but right now all is fine.

I may be having a very happy New Year!
