    Hey guys,

I'm currently using Outpost Pro Firewall (lifetime license) with ESET NOD32 for AV. My ESET license is almost up and when it is I've decided to switch to Kaspersky Anti-Virus instead.

However for an extra $10 a year I could get Kaspersky Internet Security suite which includes a few extra goodies as well as a Firewall. Right now I can't decide whether I'm better off sticking with Outpost (already have a lifetime license) or whether there's enough benefits to pay the extra $10 and use only Kaspersky for AV/FW.

The only problem is I can't seem to find any good comparisons between what Kaspersky Firewall does vs Outpost Firewall. AV-Compartives and similar sites only rate on the AV side of things and don't give any Firewall results.

So I was just wondering if any of you more experienced guys could please let me know if there's any advantages to switching to Kaspersky FW or whether Outpost is more then good enough and I can just use that + Kaspersky AV insteado_O

    Thanks in advance.

They are both excellent firewalls but if I were going to run Kaspersky AV I would just get the suite. Everything works much better when you go with a matched suite.

You could probably run the av and outpost without any problems. The only problem that i see with the suite is that if youve been running outpost for a long time ,you may miss ,the logging features ,and interaction that outpost gives .Kasperskys suite is more set and forget than outpost and you may miss that aspect.Protection wise the suite with firewall is as good as outpost.Personally id trial KIS.I did ,and didnt like it ,basically fo no other reason than cosmetics ,and it just didnt feel right for me.

I read about some points about the KIS firewall here just disregard the "stealth issue" there as a workaround was already discovered/given there. One thing I saw in KIS firewall is it cannot terminate a connection. Blocking an updater.exe file associated with a program which was already given a rule is quite tricky. I'd have to run that file first then thru Applications Control I right-click that .exe file (Application Rules/Network Rules) and make that rule. You can't just add a program or .exe file that isn't seen in the Applications Control. Unlike Comodo or Online Armor. Other than that it's quite okay.

When I was using Outpost Pro ver7.5 I had problems with Site Blocking. The Block by URL was not working properly. I was able to block a site using "Block by Keywords". Placing the IP address in "Block by URL" does not work or was not working. I saw this thread at the Outpost forums that is quite connected to the link above (again disregard the stealth issue there). The post is here

I do not know about the latest version of OP as I am now using Online Armor Premium on the other pc which formerly had Outpost.

I agree with xxJackxx there that it's better to get KIS if you decide to use KAV as main AV. The suite has improved and it's lighter. I'm running KIS 2012 with Malwarebytes Pro realtime.

You can use a simple workaround for the issue of applications being potentially granted network access..
Settings>Application control>Automatically place application to group:Untrusted. Disable checkmarks: trust applications with digital signature and trust if applications is trusted in KSN. After applying the above, execute the application you're trying to block from network access, it will be blocked from executing but it will get itself listed in Application control. Later you can move it wherever you want and modify FW rules beforehand. Don't forget to revert changed Application control settings.
