Higher price does not always mean higher demand, and low price does not always mean lower demand.

    At newegg.com PC2700 SO-DIMM 1GB is $80 and more, while PC2-5300 (DDR2 667) SO-DIMM is only $40 and more.

Good decision (imho). From what I have seen at work, Vista is not quite ready for prime-time yet.

Did you wind up ordering your laptop from Dell Outlet?

I did buy from Dell, but through the Small Business section, not the outlet.

    Sorry about that.
I meant to say UK (not EU) instead, as I know of users there having difficulty finding retail versions of XP Pro.

    @Firebytes - smart move.
Now you can sensibly hold off until Vistake/sp1 is released (if you're so inclined), at which point the price will probably be lower. Just get a version that's able to be (legally) virtualized if you do.

Personally, I do not want to use Vista yet. Sound and CD burning issues with a new office laptop purchased in the last few months (came with Vista now using XP).

I know I will have to use Vista at some point (at work), so its for me its not an option of liking/disliking Vista, more of a case of when will be the best time:

But it really is a "depends" answer to everyone else.

Audit the software you use now and what will be needed in the near future.
Does it all run on Vista ? If no - get XP

Google for vista driver problems with the specific model of Vista laptop you want.
MOST seem to run fine. If you spot problems they be wary of getting Vista with that laptop (if an option get XP) and look at another laptop.

PS, good idea with getting a Vista and XP licence if possible (and at the right price).

I managed to get my Sister in law a Laptop with XP from Tescos last month BTW (she has loads of old Sega games (like Sonic) that wont run in Vista).

Heh If you wish to get one, sure. I want the Mac more for the backlit keyboard , the DirectX10 graphics controller, and a chance to tinker with the Mac OS once again.

I am the Rick Wakeman of computers at my house. I am quite literally using three or four computers at one time. My current laptop is unusable at night and only has a 1024x768 screen. For me the current minimum 1920x1080. So the old one is getting the boot. The Mac just fits the bill for what I want to do.

I won't align myself with one hardware or software vendor. The industry is too fluid, and it is arrogant to do so. I prefer to go with what is best in the given situation.

That is why I cannot stand posts where people say "Vi$ta Sucks" or refer to Microsoft as "M$" (or that any other product sucks). The person is already stating that they cannot be subjective. If you are going to give an opinion on a product, then be clinical about it and spell out the details. At least then people who disagree with you can respect your opinion, and you can have a foundation for standing by your opinion.

Not to say that I don't have a sense of humor eniqmah. I do know the lyrics to almost every South Park song. Mr. Hanky's Christmas song is one of my favorites from the show.

My suggestion: buy a laptop with Vista Business or Ultimate. They offer "downgrade rights (PDF)" wherein you can install Windows XP Professional legally on that machine until such time that you are ready to install Vista.

    Hello,
i played on a £600 gateway laptop in tesco with vista home premium and it didnt feel slow to me.
so as long as your apps are vista compatible you might as well get vista.
planetrock is a great radio station and rickwakeman is a funny guy.
ive listened to planet rock alot since ive been away.
