@Gein The fake extension is now blocked by Webroot's Web Shield!

nonsense. so, what if i'm not a wsa user (and i am not) and happen to dl that fake extension from web store? is that all webroot can do about it? just protect wsa users and let others fall victim to this fraud? not good webroot. not good at all.

That is the first step, I have not heard back from Webroot about the fake extension and the plan as to what to do with it and I assume legal will have to get involved and should be removed from the Google Web Store. The thing is it's not Malicious but sends you to that Phishing Website. https://web9root.com/ which is blocked by Webroot as well.

well, i hope it gets taken down asap. webroot and its parent company need to take immediate action, before it's too late, before innocent people more innocent people* fall victim to this fraud.

    * apparently the fraudulent extension already has over 3000 users.

what makes this whole situation more tragic is that the fraudulent extension has a rating of 5/5 by 3000+ users while the legit one has a rating of 2.5/5. :ninja:

Nice! Is there any info on what the actual extension does? I'm assuming it's to steal login credentials, which Identity shield should protect against. (woops didn't see your post below. it's a phishing issue.)

Five star reviews from 10 definitely not fake users :p

It just sends you to a Phishing Website: https://web9root.com/ which is blocked by Webroot's Web Shield.

From what I'm seeing there's a ton of these (from other vendors) on the Chrome webstore. If you scroll down to related addons, there's a MacAfee and Norton "setup help" extension, which I bet is another phishing/credential stealing add on. And they too redirect to a weird blogging site.

I agree that's why knowledge is greater then any product and the Chrome Store should be more vigilant in removing such extensions and so on.

I'm confused. I am using WRSA exactly as I downloaded & installed it after paying for it. Does the existence of "extensions" mean that I have an incomplete AV & must add other, 3rd party stuff, to make it fully functional?

Your always confused* Only for Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge because they are forcing extensions to come from the Chrome Web Store or the Microsoft Store but in some cases they do install if you use those browsers but if not see these to get them and again in most cases you don't need to validate your keycode these days but you did when they were first released via the stores.

Does Webroot identity shield work on your browser? Did you had to add it manually?

I wish MRG Effitas was still testing Webroot. They're the only testing lab I know of that was doing tests like that - beyond the banal base detection methodologies.

I just got billed for Webroot and have not used it in about two years. I let it expire. No luck trying to contact them via email. They are not responding to request asking them to send password. Anyone have any ideas?

OK, thanks Triple Helix. Before posting here I also tried calling them and no answer. Tried a few times. I just sent an email to wr-customersales@opentext.com.
    I'll post back.
