I'm trying a trial run of a full disk restore as a real life test with the folowing environment:

WXP Pro SP2, full disk image created from 60GB drive with 7 NTFS partitions to 200GB USB drive (NTFS)

Drive restoring to: unformated 120GB drive

Method: Acronis boot CD - not using SZ

The Operation Progress window shows 9 hours remaining -- does it really take this long - what can I do in methods/setup to improve this. Seems like an excessive time.

    Hi, btimms

It mostly depends on the amount of data that is in the created Image, also the the speed of the USB, [i.e 1 or 2]
The next time you could try your BootCD [if you made one? if not I advise you do so] to see if it is better.

    Take Care,

Its USB2 - the actual used is around 25GB out of 60 and I've been using normal compression. Normally takes around an hour or less to create image w/TI for full disk including verify. In my situation I feel anything more than a couple of hours takes me back to Win95 and tape backup/restore.

This time of 9 hours for 25GB would be about right if you are running at USB 1 speed not USB 2. Possibly the USB drivers for the bootable CD version are the issue. Can you try Windows version? I believe other users have also had this speed issue.

A windows version for a trial doesn't work - for a true recovery the requirements for me are to work with a bootable media - cd/floppy/dvd.

So I need to look elsewhere.

You need to look at the BartPE version - this will give you a bootable CD using the Windows drivers.

I would think that a big chunk of that time is formatting the new drive.
I would use windows to first format the drive, then do the restore.

TI doesn't format a drive prior to restoring an image. It deletes the destination partition(s) and replaces it with the partition layout information contained in the source image.

I would like to use the BartPE solution but don't have a plugin for TI9 and can't get the plugin for TI8 to try because I don't have TI8 registered. Any suggestions appreciated.

I am going to try this and see what happens.

And the answer is? Given my explanation at #8 above, can we assume that there was no difference?

    Menorcaman,

I formatted the drive and started the restore operation from the TI boot CD and the results were the same - 9 hrs. Ultimately what I did was restore the C system partition using the Snapshot prgm supplied with BartPE CD as it restores the MBR without requiring a full disk restore. Then used TI to restore the remaining 5 partions after booting into WinXP - think the total time for the restore was under 45 min.

This is a very satisfactory time for me.

    Thanks

    Bob

    Hello btimms,

Thank you for your interest in Acronis Disk Backup Software.

Please make sure that you use the latest build (2323) of the free trial version of Acronis True Image 9.0.

You can find the full version name and build number by going to Help -> About... menu in the main program window.

If the build number is ddifferent from 2323 then please re-download the free trial version of Acronis True Image 9.0 from our web site. It will be build 2323.

Please uninstall any previously installed build prior to installing build 2323.

Please create new Bootable Rescue CD after installing the update, boot your PC from this CD and see if the problem still persists.

I would also recommend you to try the "acpi=off noapic" workaround as it is described in Acronis Help Post.

Please also check whether your external hard drive is connected to the PC through a hub. If yes, then please connect it directly.

If the problem still persists then please create Acronis Report and Linux system information (sysinfo.txt) as it is described in Acronis Help Post.

If you will not be able to create a sysinfo.txt file for some reasons then please boot from the Acronis True Image 9.0 rescue disc once more and press F11 key when the selection screen appears.

After you get the "Linux Kernel Settings" prompt, please remove the "quiet" word, click on the OK button. As the startup messages stop scrolling please write down the last few lines of the output, or use a digital camera to make shots of the output screens.

Please keep your external USB hard drive connected while creating Acronis Report and Linux system information.

What are the exact vendor and model of your external USB 2.0 hard drive?

How much time does it actually take to restore the image? Please let us know the actual time, but not the estimated one since it is usually quite approximate.

Please submit a request for technical support. Attach all the collected files and information to your request along with the step-by-step description of the actions taken before the problem appears and the link to this thread. We will investigate the problem and try to provide you with the solution.

    Thank you.

you're not the only with slow restore!

the last time i tried, it said it would take 23 hours! and that's after 8 hours of operation (i left it over night). and that was with 2323 trial.
