if i download it from download.com is the version diffrent and a would be able to remove?

also the version i have is not registered and wont be and i can enable the realtime protection but can't remove?

is there point to enable the realtime protection coz i don't use internet explorer?

There are actually two freeware versions of Spyware Doctor.

    1. The version of Spyware Doctor you have downloaded from pctools.com gives you real time protection via the On-Guard but does not allow you to remove infections.

    2. The other version available from download.com allows you to remove infections but no real time protection with On-Guard disabled.

IMHO, with using a non-IE browser, you do not need an AntiSpyware running Guard. All of them are resource hungry. Just carry out regular on-demand scans.

BUT I found the on-demand of SpyWare Doctor VERY slow. There are better scanners available.

    Take a look here.

Take your pick! Depends upon whether real-time protection slows you down and whether any spyware detected is real or a false positive. Another backup scanner for spyware is essential to check for FP's.

But in this regards, do you need either version of SpyWare Doctor with your current security setup? I would say that you have the Ant-spyware protection well covered already ;)

there are some issues with the full version (paid) that they are aware of and trying to sort out apparantly. That being the amazing drag it has on some systems.

This was corrected a couple live updates ago but for sure in the latest release. Are you still having this problem?

SD has very very low false positives. Spywareinfo.com http://www.spywareinfoforum.com/articles/spyware/spywaredoctor.php said

"There is one other good thing about the program that I feel is worth mentioning. It did not report a single false positive. Not one. This is the first time I have ever tested an antispyware or antivirus program that did not have at least one false positive. It did find one file which I could have sworn was installed by VMWare but, as it turns out, I was wrong and the program was right. False positives are the bane of malware scanning programs and it was good finally to test a program that didn't have one."

I think if you feel you might have a false positive report it to the vendor as you would a possible false positive by your AV/AT.

Also Spyware Doctor can now run on user accounts with limited privileges.

    Thanks,

    Chris

True, that particular instance was actually corrected once it was pointed out within just a matter of a couple of days. PC Tools is generally very good about correcting problems.....provided they are made aware of the problem.

Which brings me to what they are NOT so good about - having an accessible forum in order to voice these problems.

Hopefully they will adopt the philosophy that having a user community forum designed to dispell myths and provide information to the end user is a good thing

    Depends on where you look.

My initial comment on a backup scanner was not trying to state that SD was prone to false positives. But simply that any malware detected on a computer, particularly adware/spyware/riskware needs confirmation before deleting.

So a second Anti-Spyware scanner for a second opinion is a wise choice regardless of your primary scanner.
