My system info is in my signature below.

I have been doing image back ups for awhile, but never had a need to restore. I do SZ images to my C drive and external images to my Lacie.

Thought I would try a specific file restore of an unimportant Microsoft Office 2007 Word file saved in My Documents folder. If something went wrong, no big deal.

It failed with below error. Can I not do a basic text file restore, or did I miss something. My back ups go well and the instructions during the restore seemed easy. The SZ was saved thru windows and I did the restore thru windows.

I was left with the impression that if I saved and verified thru windows then I should be able to restore thru windows, as opposed to using the bootable cd I made originally.

Below is the error msg I got. What am I doing wrong.

Why are you trying to restore a system file, Desktop.ini, that was deleted?

Try restoring one of your normal data files from My Documents.

I did not try to restore the desktop.ini file, just a word document from my documents. I may have accidently not deselected all other items. I am not sure on that.

I think I did not deselect my D: partition which is the recovery partition.

I did that and was able to restore the word file from the SZ and also did it from my lacie off of an image I made from the bootable CD. Does this look good for restoring files, folders, or entire images as needed thru windows and/or the bootable CD? I have always been concerned that even while back ups went well, restores may not.

Where do I confirm that desktop.ini was not deleted. I never saw that file listed anywhere during the restore steps.

    Thanks,

    Ken

The desktop.ini file is a hidden file so you won't see it unless you have viewing of hidden files turned on and allow viewing of protected operating system files.

    Thanks MudCrab,

I had hidden files checked to show, and I unchecked Hide Protected OS files. Got two desktop icons to show on the desktop. These are files in notepad. Didn't see anything that specifically says desktop.ini. I think I may be chasing the proverbial wild goose. Everything works fine now and I was able to restore the word doc file from the SZ and from my image on the lacie that I saved with the bootable CD. So, one with windows and one with the TI environment. I don't think I deleted the desktop.ini file and not sure how that error msg even happened. The original problem was not deselecting the D: recovery partition before I deselected C: and went to and selected only the word doc for restore. I hope the successful restore says I will be able to do larger restores when needed.

When you restore the boot partition, C:, you have to do it from the Linux environment. Create the TI Recovery CD, boot your computer with it and confirm that you can verify a backup image on your external hard drive.

That's as close to confirming that you can restore the boot partition as you can get without actually doing a restore.

    Thanks jmk94903,

I already have a boot cd and save images to it through linux environment and windows. Also, to SZ on my C: drive through windows. All verify OK. Have not had a need to restore C: yet. Knock on wood. I was happy my restore of the word doc worked though windows and linux. Just don't understand the desktop.ini error msg. Since all seems well, I'll forget it and remember to uncheck my recovery partition D: before I select what I want to restore from C:.

I don't think I deleted the .ini file, or I would have problems. Not sure I would ever want to restore the recovery partition anyway. If I got to that point, I would do a clean install.

    Thanks Again,

    Ken
