Should I purchase a new graphics card?

So several years ago I upgraded my integrated graphics with a PCI (mother board does not accept PCIe) card on this XP Pent4 desktop. So I've upgraded from a 19" LCD to a 20" wide screen. The card I have now does not have a DVI port. I don't game but am wondering if I should still buy a PCI card with a DVI port or I won't notice that much difference from the VGA hookup I have now? One issue I do have is that I use the "whole" screen, e.g. my resolution is greater than the default 1600x900 and on some sites there is a scrolling lag. Could a DVI connection help with that? There are several in the $40 range. Thank You!

 

Um, no, first you need the most updated drivers for you display adapter so your screen res can be supported.

DVI won't help at all - I switched on a 22 incher and nothing was different at all.

 

I have had video cards with both the dvi and vga outputs and I have used both outputs and couldn't tell the difference between them.

I notice the newer cards work better with the LCD monitors. I have a radeon hd4350(paid 40.00) which has a tremendous quality (using vga) than my old ati 9600 pro (cost 150.00). The 9600 looks great on a CRT but has too much ghosting etc when used on a LCD even when the resolution is set to the LCD recommended resolution.

I wouldn't buy a video card unless it had the shader 3.0 feature, anything less than that is too slow.

The scrolling lag you encounter is cause by your video card being too slow. That can be because of the PCI interface which might be not fast enough.
